It was built originally in 1878 as a school house. Mrs. Kenneth Coleman, 151 Weisheimer Rd, and her son Ronnie are at the front of the old building. (note, the old photo doesn’t reveal anyone in the front of building) Beechwold Bell to Ring No More Old School, Church to ‘Die’ The last service in old Maple Grove Methodist parish House will be held Sunday morning and then the honored old building probably will be torn down. The occasion will commemorate two historic developments in the vast North Clintonville-Beechwold area of Columbus’ NorthSide--the end of a red-brick school era, and the birth of one of the city’s large Protestant congregations. What is now the old parish house beside the handsome stone Maple Grove Methodist church at Henderson Rd, and High St. was built in 1878, as a Clinton Township school. The one-room school was abandoned in 1920 and the structure became the birthplace of the Maple Grove congregation. Twenty-four of the original black walnut and oak desks were stored in the attic and forgotten. On Pearl Harbor Day, in 1941, the cornerstone for a new church was laid, and its doors were opened to worshippers in he spring of 1942. The congregation, which numbered 426 in 1937, now has 1466 communicants. Planning for the future led to the rediscovery of the old initial carved desks, void of modern individual inkwells and affixed with little metal work. At 11 a.m. Sunday, former teachers and pupils of the old school who could be contracted will again occupy the seats for the last worship service in the parish house. The Rev. W. Arthur Milne will preach his sermon from the old brick building and it will be relayed by loudspeaker to the santuary in the new church. One of those seated in the small building will be Mrs. Grace Buck, a former teacher there and now an officer of Maple Grove Church. The only surviving charter members of the congregation, Mrs. Clara Hespenthal and Mrs. Wallace Hambleton, also will have a place in the parish house. Some of he old desk have been sold, mostly to former pupils or their children for sentimental reasons. The others will also be sold. But all must remain in the little church until Sunday noon. The old parish house, painted white several years ago, fronts on High St., at the southwest corner of Henderson Rd, lying lengthwise along Henderson Rd. There have been some discussions between Clintonville civil leaders and officers of the Franklin County Historical Society on the advisability of moving the building to Whetstone Park for preservation as an historic landmark. But the problem of moving the brick structure is considered, at the moment at least, as insurmountable because of cost and overhead utility wires. Plans made by Maple Grove Church still call for wrecking crews to move in next week to dismantle the building.
