Motschman, Sr. There is a Mystery in the Shultz Family of Darke County, Ohio The Biography of DIETRICH SHULTZ by Francis D. Motschman, Sr Family tradition has it that Dietrich boldly took off for America, as a young man, from Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. He was unaware, when he somehow settled in the beautiful hills of Pennsylvania in the area of Lancaster County, that he was embarking on the role of being the progenitor of the Shultz family of Darke County, Ohio. We know that this is where he originally settled because he appears on a list of "Ye Ancient Inhabitants of Londonderry Township", of Lancaster County in the year 1778. This was a list of all of the men eligible for Military Service. This included men between the age of 18 and 35 years. It is unknown whether Dietrich was actually ever in the Service or not. As he attains a family it is known that he emigrated to Dauphin County, PA where his son John was born, Sat., January 8, 1788. It is unclear whether the other five children born before him: Jacob (Abt. 1777), George (Abt. 1778), Anna Margaretha (Abt. 1780), Catharina (Abt. 1784) and Susanna (Abt. 1786), were born in Lancaster or Dauphin County. It was originally accepted that the Darke County, Ohio Shultz's oldest ancestor was George Jacob Shultz born in Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, on Wed., the 14th of October, 1797. It certainly makes sense that he had a father and mother there in Dauphin County and that they spelled their name S H U L T Z. To the best of our knowledge there was no other family of Shultz's there other than Dietrich's forming family. This is where the MYSTERY comes into the family. It seems very likely that George Jacob was the son of either Jacob or George Shultz. The timing is right, the naming is meaningful and there are no other candidates in the line of sight. So a new entity is created... Mystery Shultz... he is the father of George Jacob and he is either Jacob or George Shultz, son of Dietrich. Maybe in time there will no longer be a Mystery. The only other grandchildren other than George Jacob that we have been able to find out about, are through Dietrich's son, John, who married Mary Ann Eisenhower and with her help produced four children. There was Esther, Anna Elizabeth, John William and Jacob. John Shultz died on Mon., December 19, 1864 in Dauphine County and he lies in Long St. Peter's Church Cemetery South of Halifax, North of Harrisburg, Dauphine County, Pennsylvania but his line of the Shultz Family lives on. Motschman, Sr. The Shultz Family of Darke County, Ohio The Biography of Mary Shultz Daughter of George Jacob Shultz and Elizabeth Creager by Francis D. Motschman, Sr. Tue., July 1, 1834. For the seventh time there was hustling and bustling and a jubilance throughout the household of George and Elizabeth Shultz in Dauphin County, Pennsylvania. Their seventh child was born and they named her Mary. Unlike some of her sisters Mary was not one to procrastinate; by the time she was 19 she knew who she wanted to marry and when she was 20 she did it. She married William Fulton Hunter, Sr. on Thu., June 15, 1854. When Mary was six years old she emigrated with her parents and siblings to the farm home of her Aunt in Warren County, Ohio near the town of Blue Ball. She and her family stayed there until she was 12 and she loved every minute of it. Work on the farm was spread out over so many people that there was an abundance of time for play and... sooo many children to play with. She remembered her time here with great fondness throughout the remainder of her life. In 1846 the time was at hand for Mary and all her family and all their belongings to make the move to start their new home in Darke County, Ohio. There were tears galore as good byes were said between the two families and then the wagons started to move down the road headed North. The trip was exhausting and rough. They felt lucky when they were able to travel on a road, as many miles were driven on just trails. Some of the older children relieved their boredom by putting a scare into the smaller children by telling that they were sure they had just seen some Indians sliding in behind some nearby trees. George and Elizabeth calmed the little ones down and then proceded to put a little scare into the older ones by telling them what would happen to them if they pulled a shenanigan like that again. The rest of the trip was pretty uneventful. It took quite some time and a lot of hard work on everyones part for the new land to become a good working farm and home but it was finally finished and everyone was proud of their accomplishments. By the time she was nineteen Mary had taken quite a shine to William Hunter, Jr. and he was enamored with her as well and they talked of marriage. William was born on Tue., April 26, 1831 in Greenville Twp., Darke County, Ohio to William Fulton Hunter, Sr. and Elizabeth (Betsy) Earhart, he was the sixth of their eight children. William Hunter, Sr. was one of the early settlers of Darke County, emigrating from Warren County in 1825. William Fulton Hunter, Jr. and Mary Shultz had a total of nine children: 1. Thomas H. Hunter b. Mon., July 28, 1856 in Greenville Twp., Darke County, Ohio. He married Jennie Brown and he passed away on Thu., June 4, 1942. 2. Ada Hunter, their first daughter, b. 1859 in Greenville Twp., Darke County, Ohio. She died at the age of 18 on Sun., April 22, 1877. 3. Willim Sylvester Hunter b. 1861 in Darke County, Ohio 4. Charles Elmer Hunter b. on Tue., January 13, 1863 and died on Tue., May 26, 1931 5. Edmond A. Hunter b. 1867 in Darke County, Ohio 6. Mary E. Hunter b. 1868 in Darke County, Ohio 7. John I. Hunter b. 1870 in Darke County, Ohio 8. Prudence O. Hunter b. 1874 in Darke County, Ohio 9. David D. Hunter b. 1877 Additional Comments: We only know that Mary died sometime after 1880. Motschman, Sr. The Shultz Family of Darke County, Ohio The Biography of George Jacob Shultz Son of George or Jacob Shultz by Francis D. Motschman, Sr George Jacob Shultz was the son of either George or Jacob Shultz and was born in Dauphin County, Pennsylvania on Wed., October 14, 1797. The lush green hills of Dauphin County pleased him but couldn't hold him in their grasp as was with John Shultz. George was raised on the farm and learned how to be a good farmer. When he was about fifteen he served in the military in the War of 1812. He must have lied about his age to have done this.. He left the service and came back home where he met and successfully courted Elizabeth Creager or as seen in some places, Elizabeth Gregor. Since all of the Darke County Shultz's referred to her as Creager we will also. Elizabeth was a strong girl and quite pretty. She was a year younger than George having been born on Sat., April 3, 1798. They were very much in love with each other and she became pregnant shortly after their marriage. Their first born was a son and he was given the name of Henry. We have no dates for his birth or death, as we do for the rest of the children, so it is probable that he died shortly after birth. Being young, it was no time untill she was pregnant again, and that's the way the years flew by. Working the farm, pregnant, working the farm, etc., etc. Susanna (Midlam) was the second, born on a nice spring day, Thur., May 8, 1819. Then there was Rebecca (Hunter), (Hartle), Sun., Sept. 22, 1822 in York County, PA. Then again, there was a boy whom they named Jacob. He was born on Sun., May 6, 1827. Next came Elizabeth (Brown) in 1830 and another girl, Leah (Riffle), on Fri., March 23, 1832. They had two more, Mary (Hunter) on Tue., July 1, 1834 and George Washington born on Tue., July 25, 1837. Three of the children married into the Hunter family. Rebecca married Robert Hunter, Mary married Robert's Nephew, William Fulton Hunter, Jr. and then George Washington married William's sister, Sarah Hunter. In 1838 Susanna accepted the proposal of her ardent suitor, William Midlam to marriage and their first born, Samuel was born on Sun., April 21, 1839. George was still young enough to have ambitions which were shared by Elizabeth. She had been receiving letters from her sister in Ohio telling her how wonderful their farm was doing. After a while they couldn't stand it any longer, they sold their farm and emigrated to Ohio. It is known that they stayed for a time at the home of Elizabeth's sister and her family near Blue Ball in Warren County. While they stayed there George went scouting for a prospective area for their new farm. It took about six years but he found some fine acreage to purchase in Greenville Twp., Darke County, Ohio. Elizabeth's sister and her family must have been truly wonderful people and blessed with great patience to have put up with an entire family for about six years. It isn't known whether Susanne and William Midlam stayed on the farm in Warren County or not. If they did they had three children born to them there, before going to Darke County. It is probable that the Midlam's went to Darke County first and that could have been instrumental in George's decision to go to Darke County. After leaving Warren County for the super rich soil of Darke County George and Elizabeth lived out the remainder of their lives near Ansonia in Darke County, Ohio. He died on Sat., March 31, 1866 and she moved in with Susanna and William after George's death. She went to meet with George on Sun., September 14, 1873 after fighting a losing battle with Pneumonia. They are both resting in the Ansonia Cemetery, just East of Ansonia. Motschman, Sr. The Shultz Family of Darke County, Ohio The Biography of Susanna Shultz Daughter of George Jacob Shultz & Elizabeth Creager by Francis D. Motschman, Sr. Susanna Shultz who was called Susan by her friends was born to be a mother. She was constantly helping her mother with the children and the work that befell the woman of that day. It was hard work and totally unending and her mother was totally appreciative. When Susanna was eighteen years old she met William Midlam and the two fell in love with each other and a year later they were married. The set up their married life living on the Shultz Farm and had a son, Samuel, on Sun., April 21, 1839, before emigrating, along with Susanna's mother and father, to Ohio in 1840. The chain of events that followed are not very clear. It seems that their next born, a son, George, born on Sun., Septembe 26, 1841 arrived in Darke County. Strangely, the next born, W. Harvey born on Mon., March 27, 1843 came into this world in Warren County. Possibly she had had a hard time giving birth to George and visited with her mother and aunt for the birth of Harvey. Through the coming years they had eight more children born to them in Darke County: Henry born Thu., August 22, 1844; Elizabeth born Wed., September 2, 1846; Lucina born Mon., December 25, 1848; John Carter born Thu., October 3, 1850; William Perry born Mon., October 25, 1852; Frankford M. born Sat., January 27, 1855; Milton born Thu., February 12, 1857 and Thomas born Sun., February 21, 1860. For other generations see the Midlam Tree. Susanna and William lived out their lives on the farm near Ansonia. William succumbed to heart trouble Wed., April 13, 1892 and was buried in the Earhart Cemetery on SR118 South of Ansonia in Darke Co., Ohio. Susanna lived barely three more years, passing away Thu., January 31, 1895. Motschman, Sr. The Shultz Family of Darke County, Ohio The Biography of REBECCA SHULTZ Daughter of George Jacob Shultz & Elizabeth Creager by Francis D. Motschman, Sr On Thu., February 5, 1846, Rebecca Shultz walked down the isle of Matrimony with Robert Hunter, an older neighbor and friend with whom she had become quite attached. She was 24, being born on Sun., September 22, 1822. He was 37, and was born on Sun., January 3, 1809 and was the youngest of the eight children of William and Mary Hunter. They were happy in their marriage but he was ill, much more so than was suspected and he died less than a year later on Thu., October 14, 1847. Rebecca was devastated to have lost her husband so soon and especially since she had just found out that she was with child. The baby was born after Robert's death, on Fri., April 4, 1848. Rebecca named her Mary Elizabeth Hunter. Robert was buried in the Earhart Cemetery located South of Ansonia, Ohio on SR118. Six years later Rebecca was taken by a young man who was two years her junior. His name was David Hartle the son of Jacob Hartle and Catherine Spade. He was smittened by Rebecca, also and he got along first rate with little Mary Elizabeth. He was born in 1824. David and Rebecca were lovers and their union was blessed on Thu., June 3, 1852 just four days after the birth of their first child, Franklin Pearce, on Sun., May 30, 1852. This was scandalous in this time and they probably took a few jabs from some righteous acquaintances. Putting their past behind them they proceded to have four more children: m. H. Beers & Co., Publishers, 1897 Commemorative Historical and Biographical Record of Wood County, Ohio, Its Past and Present. Chicago: J. H. Beers & Co., 1897. HEZEKIAH S. KIGER is a representative of one of Ohio's pioneer families. He was born October 18, 1830, in the town of Lancaster, Fairfield county, a son of WILLIAM and CHRISTINA (WALDUCK) KIGER, who were natives of Germany. The father was a lifelong farmer. He left his native land when a mere boy, and his wife crossed the Atlantic at the age of eight years. They were married in Ohio, and located in Fairfield county, where, in Lancaster township, Mr. KIGER owned 340 acres of land, making his home thereon until his death. The children of his family were: LOUIS, who died at the age of fifteen; HENRY, of Fairfield county; MARGARET, deceased wife of JOHN BUCHER, of Millgrove; WILLIAM, who died in Fairfield county; JOSIAH, who died in Millgrove; MARY, deceased wife of HARVEY HARRIS; ELIZABETH, wife of GEORGE RIGBY; JESSE, of Lancaster, Ohio; HEZEKIAH S.; SUSANNA, wife of SILAS WILLIAMSON, of Fairfield county; and AMOS, also of Fairfield county. Our subject acquired his education in the public schools near his home, and assisted in the cultivation of his father's farm until his marriage, which was celebrated in Fairfield county, November 27, 1860, Miss SAMANTHA JANE HUNTER becoming his wife. She was born in January, 1831. Their union was blessed with three children, viz.: CHARLES, who died in his twentieth year; WILLIAM, who died in infancy; and EFFIE BELLE, wife of OTTO MYERS, of Liberty township, by whom she has one child, BESSIE. Mrs. KIGER is a daughter of THOMAS R. and ABIGAIL (BRUMFIELD) HUNTER. Her father was born in Hocking township, Fairfield county, April 27, 1801, and was the second male child born in that township. His father, JAMES HUNTER, a native of Philadelphia, married MARGARET REESE, and followed school teaching in Ohio. Their son, THOMAS, began to learn the blacksmith's trade, but was obliged to abandon this, on account of a disabled arm, and turned his attention to the operation of 160 acres of land, which his father gave him. He died May 11, 1882, and his wife, who was born in October, 1805, departed this life April 13, 1882. Their children were AMANDA P., wife of BENJAMIN FRANKLIN, of Boone county, Iowa; MARGARET, who died September 1, 1854, at the age of twenty-four; Mrs. KIGER; JAMES, who died at the age of six years; HANNAH, wife of WILLIAM COCHRAN; SOLOMON, who is living on the old homestead; JOSEPH and MARY, twins, both of whom died at the age of five years; JOHN WESLEY, who died in infancy; and ANN MARIA, who died in childhood. For a few years after their marriage our subject and his wife lived in Fairfield county, where Mr. KIGER owned 125 acres of land, that he inherited from his father. At length he sold this, and, in 1872, came to Wood county, purchasing eighty acres of land in Liberty township, of which thirty acres had been plowed. The improvements were very poor, but he had transformed this into a fine farm that to-day is a monument to his thrift and enterprise. Although his life has been a busy one, he always finds time to faithfully perform his duties of citizenship, and efficiently served as school director for six years. He takes quite an active part in politics, is well informed on the issues of the day, and is a stanch Republican.
