H. Beers & Co., Publisher, 1897 Commemorative Historical and Biographical Record of Wood County, Ohio, Its Past and Present. Chicago: J. H. Beers & Co., 1897. PHILIP BARNHISEL. Among the influential and representative agriculturists of Bloom township, this gentleman occupies an honorable position. Almost his entire life has been passed upon his present farm, where he was born June 11, 1851. His father, MARTIN BARNHISEL, came to this county from Mahoning county, Ohio, buying eighty acres of land in Section 21, Bloom township--sixty acres of which are still in the possession of our subject. He was a small, delicate man, and on his death was buried in Bloom Chapel cemetery. In the family were three children: SARAH, who became the wife of HENRY JACOBS, and died on the home farm; LOTTIE, who is now Mrs. LOUIS MOMINEE, of Lucas county, Ohio; and PHILIP. The mother later became the wife of JOHN SLATTERBECK, who is now deceased, and she makes her home near Toldedo, Ohio. PHILIP BARNHISEL acquired his early education in the Bloom Center schools, taught by a Mr. TRUMBULL; but when about nine years of age he was compelled to start out to make his own livelihood, and with his first money purchased a pair of red top-boots, which he thought was all that was lacking to make him a man. For some years he worked for others, and, when about eighteen, went to Whiteside county, Ill., remaining there some eighteen months. He began farming for himself upon the old homestead, and, before his marriage, his sister LOTTIE was his housekeeper. In Bloom township, on January 7, 1875, Mr. BARNHISEL married Miss DIANA BAKER, who was born in Marion township, Hancock Co., Ohio, February 16, 1852, and is a daughter of JACOB and SUSANNA (BRIGHT) BAKER, the former a native of Westmoreland county, Penn. They have become the parents of seven children: CLAREN, who was born July 25, 1876, and is a teacher by profession; ELLA M., who was born July 28, 1879, and died July 23, 1881; WILLIAM S., who was born August 27, 1881; OLIVE B., who was born September 29, 1883; NETTIE, who was born October 1, 1885; FLORENCE, who was born May 30, 1889, died August 7, following; and BESSIE, who was born May 30, 1891, and died April 30, 1893. At one time Mr. BARNHISEL sold his interest in the homestead, but later purchased the farm from other heirs. The farm buildings are neat and substantial, and everything about the premises is creditable to the taste and industry of the proprietor. His labors have been crowned with success, and he is deserving of the highest praise, for all has been attained through his own industrious and well-directed efforts. He is upright and honorable in all things, never stooping to anything low or mean to gain a point or secure money. He takes an active interest in political affairs, generally voting the Republican ticket, though not strictly partisan, preferring to cast his ballot for the man whom he thinks best qualified to fill the position, and has served as a director in School District No. 5, Bloom township. Since the age of eighteen, Mr. BARNHISEL has been a devoted member of the Church of Christ. Motschman, Sr. The Shultz Family of Darke County, Ohio The Biography of George Jacob Shultz Son of George or Jacob Shultz by Francis D. Motschman, Sr George Jacob Shultz was the son of either George or Jacob Shultz and was born in Dauphin County, Pennsylvania on Wed., October 14, 1797. The lush green hills of Dauphin County pleased him but couldn't hold him in their grasp as was with John Shultz. George was raised on the farm and learned how to be a good farmer. When he was about fifteen he served in the military in the War of 1812. He must have lied about his age to have done this.. He left the service and came back home where he met and successfully courted Elizabeth Creager or as seen in some places, Elizabeth Gregor. Since all of the Darke County Shultz's referred to her as Creager we will also. Elizabeth was a strong girl and quite pretty. She was a year younger than George having been born on Sat., April 3, 1798. They were very much in love with each other and she became pregnant shortly after their marriage. Their first born was a son and he was given the name of Henry. We have no dates for his birth or death, as we do for the rest of the children, so it is probable that he died shortly after birth. Being young, it was no time untill she was pregnant again, and that's the way the years flew by. Working the farm, pregnant, working the farm, etc., etc. Susanna (Midlam) was the second, born on a nice spring day, Thur., May 8, 1819. Then there was Rebecca (Hunter), (Hartle), Sun., Sept. 22, 1822 in York County, PA. Then again, there was a boy whom they named Jacob. He was born on Sun., May 6, 1827. Next came Elizabeth (Brown) in 1830 and another girl, Leah (Riffle), on Fri., March 23, 1832. They had two more, Mary (Hunter) on Tue., July 1, 1834 and George Washington born on Tue., July 25, 1837. Three of the children married into the Hunter family. Rebecca married Robert Hunter, Mary married Robert's Nephew, William Fulton Hunter, Jr. and then George Washington married William's sister, Sarah Hunter. In 1838 Susanna accepted the proposal of her ardent suitor, William Midlam to marriage and their first born, Samuel was born on Sun., April 21, 1839. George was still young enough to have ambitions which were shared by Elizabeth. She had been receiving letters from her sister in Ohio telling her how wonderful their farm was doing. After a while they couldn't stand it any longer, they sold their farm and emigrated to Ohio. It is known that they stayed for a time at the home of Elizabeth's sister and her family near Blue Ball in Warren County. While they stayed there George went scouting for a prospective area for their new farm. It took about six years but he found some fine acreage to purchase in Greenville Twp., Darke County, Ohio. Elizabeth's sister and her family must have been truly wonderful people and blessed with great patience to have put up with an entire family for about six years. It isn't known whether Susanne and William Midlam stayed on the farm in Warren County or not. If they did they had three children born to them there, before going to Darke County. It is probable that the Midlam's went to Darke County first and that could have been instrumental in George's decision to go to Darke County. After leaving Warren County for the super rich soil of Darke County George and Elizabeth lived out the remainder of their lives near Ansonia in Darke County, Ohio. He died on Sat., March 31, 1866 and she moved in with Susanna and William after George's death. She went to meet with George on Sun., September 14, 1873 after fighting a losing battle with Pneumonia. They are both resting in the Ansonia Cemetery, just East of Ansonia. Motschman, Sr. The Shultz Family of Darke County, Ohio The Biography of Susanna Shultz Daughter of George Jacob Shultz & Elizabeth Creager by Francis D. Motschman, Sr. Susanna Shultz who was called Susan by her friends was born to be a mother. She was constantly helping her mother with the children and the work that befell the woman of that day. It was hard work and totally unending and her mother was totally appreciative. When Susanna was eighteen years old she met William Midlam and the two fell in love with each other and a year later they were married. The set up their married life living on the Shultz Farm and had a son, Samuel, on Sun., April 21, 1839, before emigrating, along with Susanna's mother and father, to Ohio in 1840. The chain of events that followed are not very clear. It seems that their next born, a son, George, born on Sun., Septembe 26, 1841 arrived in Darke County. Strangely, the next born, W. Harvey born on Mon., March 27, 1843 came into this world in Warren County. Possibly she had had a hard time giving birth to George and visited with her mother and aunt for the birth of Harvey. Through the coming years they had eight more children born to them in Darke County: Henry born Thu., August 22, 1844; Elizabeth born Wed., September 2, 1846; Lucina born Mon., December 25, 1848; John Carter born Thu., October 3, 1850; William Perry born Mon., October 25, 1852; Frankford M. born Sat., January 27, 1855; Milton born Thu., February 12, 1857 and Thomas born Sun., February 21, 1860. For other generations see the Midlam Tree. Susanna and William lived out their lives on the farm near Ansonia. William succumbed to heart trouble Wed., April 13, 1892 and was buried in the Earhart Cemetery on SR118 South of Ansonia in Darke Co., Ohio. Susanna lived barely three more years, passing away Thu., January 31, 1895. Motschman, Sr. The Shultz Family of Darke County, Ohio The Biography of REBECCA SHULTZ Daughter of George Jacob Shultz & Elizabeth Creager by Francis D. Motschman, Sr On Thu., February 5, 1846, Rebecca Shultz walked down the isle of Matrimony with Robert Hunter, an older neighbor and friend with whom she had become quite attached. She was 24, being born on Sun., September 22, 1822. He was 37, and was born on Sun., January 3, 1809 and was the youngest of the eight children of William and Mary Hunter. They were happy in their marriage but he was ill, much more so than was suspected and he died less than a year later on Thu., October 14, 1847. Rebecca was devastated to have lost her husband so soon and especially since she had just found out that she was with child. The baby was born after Robert's death, on Fri., April 4, 1848. Rebecca named her Mary Elizabeth Hunter. Robert was buried in the Earhart Cemetery located South of Ansonia, Ohio on SR118. Six years later Rebecca was taken by a young man who was two years her junior. His name was David Hartle the son of Jacob Hartle and Catherine Spade. He was smittened by Rebecca, also and he got along first rate with little Mary Elizabeth. He was born in 1824. David and Rebecca were lovers and their union was blessed on Thu., June 3, 1852 just four days after the birth of their first child, Franklin Pearce, on Sun., May 30, 1852. This was scandalous in this time and they probably took a few jabs from some righteous acquaintances. Putting their past behind them they proceded to have four more children: m. Oran C. born Wed., June 6, 1855 m. Fremont Dayton born Thu., May 8, 1856 m. David O. born in 1859 and f. Calla Bell "Callie" born in July, 1863 David died in 1904 and Rebecca died on Sun., Jan. 22, 1899, both were buried in the Beamsville Cemetery, Richland Twp., Darke County, Ohio. Motschman, Sr. Elizabeth Shultz was born in 1830 and from the time she was old enough she was always working on the 40 acre farm of her parents. She was named after her Mother and they always shared a common bond. Elizabeth had never met any fellow's that piqued her interest... in fact, she had never met many young men; she was happy working on the farm and taking care of her brothers and sisters. Mother Elizabeth talked to her about this as did George. She took their advice and started to attend more social functions around Ansonia. Eventually she did meet someone who liked her and wanted to marry her... and the best part of it was, she fell for him, too. So, after 29 years she married this young man, Stephen Brown. He was the son of Brown and "Unknown". The marriage took place on a Sunday afternoon on October 16, 1859. Their first offspring was Mary E. Brown and she was born Abt. 1861. Between 1861 and 1872 the Brown's had six more children. First there was: Orlando Brown born Abt. 1862, then Frank Brown born Thu., May 5, 1864 in Woodington, Darke County, Ohio and who died on Wed., December 9, 1931 in Richmond, Wayne County, Indiana. Frank married Cora Etta Bennett on Wed., June 24, 1903. Odelia Brown was born Abt. 1866, and Harry Brown made his appearance Abt. 1869, followed by Charles Brown who came to town on Sat., November 12, 1870 in Beamsville, Darke County, Ohio and who passed away just a month before Frank, on Mon., November 9, 1931 in Dawn (Ansonia), Darke County, Ohio. Motschman, Sr. The Shultz Family of Darke County, Ohio The Biography of George Washington Shultz Son of George Jacob Shultz and Elizabeth Creager by Francis D. Motschman, Sr. George Washington Shultz had a reputation that was almost as big as he was, and that was big. George stood about 6 feet 6 inches tall and was solidly built. According to his grandson, Sherman Harold Shultz, George would walk to the next town if there was the slightest prospect of a good fight. I used to rankle my father-in-law, Sherman by manipulating the conversation to his grandfather, then, when he got to the part about him fighting, I would remind him of the stature of men in those days. "Don't you think there is something strange about a man hungering for a fight with someone who is probably about a foot shorter and about 70 pounds lighter than he is?", I would ask Sherman who would then change the subject. George was just an ordinary sized boy when he was born at home on Tue., July 25, 1837 but by the time he was a teenager he could no longer wear hand-me- downs for there were none large enough. He took some good natured kidding about his size... but not a lot. People soon learned not to be too free in their kidding with this boy in a mans body. Due to his size he always got the heaviest jobs to perform and naturally, the most dangerous. He was not one to work anyway less than hard. When he did some heavy chore that none of the men could do he would get praise from everyone. This became a tonic for him; he had to do things beyond what others could do and more dangerous than anyone else would do... and get the praise that came with it. Sarah Marie Hunter gave him her hand in marriage and the nuptuals were performed on Wed., September 29, 1858 in Darke County, Ohio. Sarah Marie was the daughter of William Fulton Hunter, Sr. and Elizabeth (Betsy) Earhart. She was born on Sat., December 7, 1839 in Greenville, Darke County, Ohio. Being married to this big man, who loved to live dangerously, was not going to be an easy task but Sarah felt that she was up to it. Two years after their marriage, George and Sarah heard the cry of their first child, a girl whom they named Laura Belle Shultz. Laura was born on Sat., December 25, 1860. This was a divine Christmas present, they thought. Laura Belle died 85 years later on Thu., August 30, 1945 in Greenville Twp., Darke County, Ohio. The next child born would become the grandfather of my wife, Juanita V. Shultz. This was William Sherman Shultz and he was born on Fri., October 21, 1864. He died 84 years later on Sat., July 31, 1948 at Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton, Montgomery Co., Ohio from a kidney disorder. Ida Mae Shultz made herself known on Mon., March 19, 1866 in Ansonia, Darke Co., Ohio. She died at the age of 79 in Verona, Preble Co., Ohio on Sun., October 21, 1945, just 2 months after her sister, Laura. The last child born to them was Thomas Albert Shultz who was born on Mon., September 14, 1874. Before he died on Mon., January 29, 1945 he had 10 children.
