Motschman, Sr. The Shultz Family of Darke County, Ohio The Biography of Earl Shultz Son of William Sherman Shultz and Whilemena "Lillie" Mae Petersime by Francis D. Motschman, Sr. Sherman Shultz and his wife Lillie would end up having nine children. The first born was Earl Shultz. He was first and foremost, a farmer although he had a stint of teaching school in North Star. He also worked for the New York Central Rail Road in his later years. Earl was born on Thu., March 28, 1889 according to records kept by his sister, Emma. He married Fredricka L. Olt in 1912. Rickie, as she was called was a straight standing, beautiful girl who was born to Adam and Minnie Olt in 1888. Earl and Rickie never had children and that is a shame because they would have been excellent parents. I personally remember Earl as a very quiet man. He was a thrifty man not known to spend money frivolously. When he was Rickies boyfriend and maybe he wouldn't even be considered that, he was either working or going to school in Greenville and they were separated. He would send her postcards to keep himself alive in her memory. The message on one sent April 5, 1911 was: "Hellow, how are you, I am all right. Well I have something new to tell you. You and I are invited to a social party at Dr. Polings a Friday eve. Will you go with me and have a good time? Please let me know if you will go along by return mail, or by telephone. This is a kind of a surprise, isn't it? From your love, Earl. He needn't have worried, she loved him and waited on him to get back to Ansonia. The next year he and Rickie were married. Everyone who knew them said she loved to make him pies, that there was never a time when there wasn't a pie on their kitchen table. They lived a peacful, quiet life together doing good things for others as much as they could. My wife, their niece, remembers them visiting two or three times a month during the depression when things were so tough. Each time they came they would always bring a basket of food. Sometimes that would be augmented with a bag of coal for the coal stove. Earl and Rickie were staunch Lutheran's and he was envolved with the Lutheran committee that controled Wernle Children's Home in Richmond, Indiana. It was only natural then, when my wife's mother died in 1934, that Earl convinced her father to send his six children to Wernle's. He did make another offer which was to have Juanita (my wife) come live with him and Rickie. Her dad was all for it until Earl said that the only way that they would do it, tho, was to adopt Juanita. Sherman would have no part of that, tho, so all six children went to the home. Earl and Rickie visited them at the home more than anyone else. Earl passed on Thu., July 24, 1952 and was buried in Ansonia Cemetery, Ansonia, Darke Co., Ohio. Rickie joined him in eternal rest on Sat., December 10, 1983. Motschman, Sr. The Shultz Family of Darke County, Ohio The Biography of Chester George Shultz Son of William Sherman Shultz and Whilemena "Lillie" Mae Petersime by Francis D. Motschman, Sr. Chester George Shultz, a Honey Dipper, a Trash Collector, a Convicted Felon, a Staunch Jehovah Witness, a Beloved Father. Could one man be all of these? The answer to that is Yes, and more. Chester, or Ches' as everyone called him, was born on Thu., May 26, 1892 in Greenville Twp., Darke County, Ohio. He was the second of nine children born to Sherman and Lillie Mae Shultz. "He was a good Big Brother", his brother Sherman Harold said, when talking of him, "He was thirteen years older than I so we didn't do many things together when I was a boy... but he was a good brother to me". My wife, Juanita Shultz, remembers him from when she was a young girl in the 1930's. She said that he would come to Dayton and pile all six kids in the back of his truck and take off for his farm. She said it was great fun for all the kids, bundled up in blankets in the bed of the truck. They would sing songs as loud as they wanted and tell stories and laugh a lot. Once there he and his wife, Bonnie, would treat them royally, doing whatever it took to make their weekend a pleasant experience. "They never talked about religion to any of us", Juanita said. Chester and his family were Jehovah Witness' and could often be seen on the street corners of Greenville along with his daughters passing out pamphlets and talking to people about HIS religion. His son, Freddie, would be there sometimes but as often as not wiggled out of it in some manner. In spite of having to go out on these religious foray's with their dad, his kids loved him and were happy having him as a father. Someone once said, "The way to make money is to do something no one else wants to do". Chester must have been aware of this as that is what he did. He had two business' going at the same time. One was the Honey Dipping business. If you don't know what a Honey Dipper did, it was this: he emptied out privies. If you don't know what a privie is: it's an outside toilet. It wasn't every man that could do this work. This job didn't keep him totally busy so he collected trash. He was able to fix many trashed items and sell them as used merchandise. What he couldn't fix he too, would junk. His business' took him all over the area so many people knew him and he had many friends all over Darke County. He married Ruth Worley sometime around 1910 and they had four children. The first being Margaret and the other three are unknown to me. I have taken two stories, one from his granddaughter, Elisabeth Reyes, of California, and one from his brother, Sherman Harold, and merged them to arrive at this: It was not unusual for Chester to be gone for several days when he was working his jobs. It appears that Ruth is an alcoholic and on one occasion while he was gone she went into town and spent the day drinking at a bar. Sometime during that day there was a catastrophy at home. What the catastrophy was we don't know. We do know that three of his four children were killed. Only the oldest girl, Margaret, escaped with her life. When Chester got home and found out what had happened and what his wife was doing while it happened, he took after her and probably would have killed her if he could have. As it was, he managed to beat her up pretty good and even hit her once with a hammer, but she managed to escape his wrath and had him arrested. He had a trial and ended up spending some time at the Mansfield prison, in Mansfield, Ohio. We have a card he sent to his brother Earl while at the prison dated November 1, 1916. Margaret, in the meantime went to live with a relative in Wyoming. In 1924 Chester married Bonnie Irene Miller Boze. Her first husband was Ralph Boze and she brought with her two children: Maxine Boze age 6 and Russell Boze age 5. Chester and Bonnie had four children. Their first, Evelyn Gertrude was born on Mon., September 19, 1927, then came Ida Mae who was born Abt. 1929. The third born was Frederick "Freddie" who came into this world Abt. 1931 and then their last child was a girl who they named Louise and who was born on Thu., May 18, 1933. Grandma Lillie Mae Petersime Shultz said that naming her just Louise, was a no-no, that she had to have a biblical name. Lillie called her 'Mary' and the name stuck and she was Mary Louise from then on, although legally it was just Louise. ( This comes from Elisabeth Reyes of Calif., Mary Louise's daughter) Bonnie spoke German and English and played the piano, to the delight of all the children. Chester finally came to his own death on Sat., April 16, 1955 in Greenville, Darke County, Ohio. Bonnie died on Thu., November 18, 1976 in Greenville, Darke County, Ohio Both Chester and Bonnie are interred in the Ansonia Cemetery, Ansonia, Darke County, Ohio This file has been created by a form at http://www.poppet.org/bios/ohbios/ File size: 5.3 Kb ______________________________ ------------------------------ X-Message: #5 Date: Wed, 23 Jul 2003 19:47:36 -0400 From: "Maggie Stewart" To: OH-FOOTSTEPS-L@rootsweb.com Message-ID: <052701c35174$cbc2bfe0$0300a8c0@local.net> Subject: [OH-FOOT] Fw: BIO: Cook, 1893, Trumbull Content-Type: text/plain; charset="Windows-1252" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit ----- Original Message ----- From: "Rod's Account" To: Cc: "File Copy" Sent: Sunday, June 08, 2003 8:34 PM Below please find the bio of the brother of one of my wife's ancestors. If anyone is working on this Cook Hadlock family from which James Cook descends, I would love to talk with them. Rod Fleck Sent from Forks, Washington Biographical History of Northeastern Ohio Lewis Publishing Company of Chicago 1893 Page 324 James Cook James Cook, who has been identified with the interests of Mecca township, Trumbull County, Ohio, since May 1832, is ranked with the prominent and leading citizens of the township. Of his life we present the following brief sketch: James Cook was born in Locke, Cayuga County, New York, July 21, 1821. His father, Nathan Cook, a native of that same place was born in 1800, a son of James Cook, a native of Connecticut and a veteran of the Revolutionary war. The latter was one of the early settlers of Cayuga County, New York, whence he and his wife, who before her marriage was a Miss Brown, came out to the Western Reserve and settled in Mecca township, where they both died, and are buried. He lived to the advanced age of ninety. The names of their children are John, Nathan, Zachariah, Samuel, Amos, and Lois. Nathan Cook was reared and educated at Locke, New York, and at the age of nineteen years married Permelia Hadlock, daughter of James and Nancy Hadlock, her father being one of the old Tories of that county, her mother a native of Scotland. Her father and mother removed from New York to Crawford County, Pennsylvania, where they died at the ages of ninety-three and ninety-seven years respectively. Nathan Cook and his wife came out to Ohio and settled in Mecca township before any road had been cut through to their farm, the same farm, on which the subject of our sketch now lives. Here the mother died in April 1846, leaving a family of seven children, viz: Asa, a resident of Michigan; James, the subject of this sketch; Nathan, deceased; Lois, a resident of Hebron, Nebraska; Betsey, of Michigan; Joseph, deceased [CHERI's ANCESTOR]; and Uphema, of Iowa. The father of this family died November 18, 1888, aged eighty-eight years. He was a farmer by occupation, and in politics was first a Whig and afterward a Republican. James Cook was a lad of eleven years when he came with his parents to Ohio. Here he grew up and was educated. With the exception of three years spent at Pierpoint, Ashtabula, Ohio, he lived on his present farm since he was eleven years old. His home here is one of the most attractive rural places in this part of the country. The residence is beautifully located on a natural building site, is surrounded by a pretty lawn, and is shaded by tall pines and other evergreens. The farm comprises ninety acres and is situated very near the center of the township. Mr. Cook was married, September 2, 1844, in Ashtabula county, to Permelia Cole, who, like her husband was born in Cayuga county, New York. Her parents, Ezra and Mercy Cole are both deceased. She died in 1858, leaving one daughter living, Mrs. Mercy Fink of Mahoning County, Ohio, and two, Eiline and Sarah, deceased. November 10, 1858, Mr. Cook was married, in Hancock County, Indiana, to Miss Mary Poole, a native of Mecca township, this county, and a daughter of Robert and Margaret (Kissicker) Poole, her father a native of Maryland and her mother of Virginia. Her mother died January 28, 1892, at the age of eight-six years, her father having passed away some years ago in Hancock county, Indiana, aged seventy-two. Mr. and Mrs. Poole had twelve children, five sons and seven daughters. Two of the sons were soldiers in the Civil War. Mrs. Cook has one brother, Frank R. Poole, a resident of Indianapolis, Indiana. Mr. and Mrs. Cook have children as follows: Frank, a resident of Lawrence County, Pennsylvania; Gertrude, wife of W. Obrien, of Knoxville, Tennessee; and Fred, a book-keeper in Chicago, Illinois. Politically, Mr. Cook is a Republican. He has served as Township Trustee, and for the past fifteen years has been a member of the School Board. He is an Elder in the United Presbyterian Church. Few men in this vicinity are held in higher esteem than James Cook. --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Checked by AVG anti-virus system (http://www.grisoft.com). She was the first girl and it was everything she could do to not be a tomboy. She was pretty and sweet and was loved very much by all. After she had become a beautiful young lady of seventeen years of age she married a 17 year old man by the name of Ranzie McNay. Ranzie was born in Ohio on Mon., March 12, 1894. I do not know what preempted the move but at some point in time she and Ranzie emigrated to Indianapolis, Indiana. Ranzie was a heating contractor and worked for a couple of Heating Companies for a number of years before opening his own Heating & Air Conditioning Company. This was very hard and dirty work in the old days of large wood and coal furnaces. He would come home exhausted she would do her best to make him comfortable. Minnie had seven children with Ranzie: 1. Edgar McNay, b. Sun., January 21, 1912. He married Bathsheba Butler 2. Emerson McNay, b. Thu., July 24, 1913. He married 1. Epsie 2. Their big love was traveling. 5. Lillian Ruth McNay, b. Fri., January 29, 1926. She married Harry Kineer. 6. David McNay, b. Sun., May 11, 1930. He married Evelyn MacDaugh. David was interested in and became quite good at flying sailplanes. I saw an article about him with pictures of him in his sail plane in National Geographic a number of years ago. He lives in California and to the best of my knowledge completed his working life selling large aircraft to foriegn governments. 7. Ranzie McNay, Jr., b. Sun., May 21, 1933 and died Sun., May 21, 1933. In the years that she was raising the children she became deeply envolved with her church. She was a "Prayer" and whenever the minister got a call to visit a sick person he would call Minnie and she would go with him to see the sick person and Minnie would pray for them. Every one in the family was proud of her for what she was doing and everyone would pitch in and do as many of the chores as possible, that she would normally have had to do, to free up time for her missions. On Wed., June 14, 1944 Minnie died as a result of a second stroke following a bad traffic accident she had experienced as the result of another stroke. Alva was the favorite brother of my father-in-law, Sherman H. Shultz, while he was growing up. Alva loved to hunt and fish and he had the patience to put up with his little brother in these activities. These foray's came to an unhappy end with Alva leaving for service with the US Army in late summer of 1918. He was stationed at Camp Sherman, Chillicothe, Ross Co., Ohio. Frank Boze, a cousin, went into the service at the same time and was also stationed at the same place. The sadness of his going into the service turned tragic when both he and his cousin contracted the Spanish Influenza that was an epidemic in the United States at the time. Both men died. Lillie Mae and Sherman were notified of Alva's illness and traveled to Camp Sherman to see him. They said things in the hospital there, were a mess. Alva begged them to try and get him out of there and into a civilian hospital, "If you can do that", he said, "I'll make it... if I have to stay here I'm going to die". They did everything they could but the Army wouldn't release Alva. He died on Mon., October 7, 1918. One week later, on Tue., October 15, 1918, his cousin, Frank Boze also died from the flu. There were thousands of soldiers that died from this Spanish Flu. Both the French Government and the United States Government sent the family framed Commendation for his service to the War Effort and some time later Sherman and Lillie also received a $10,000 insurance check from the United States Government.
