Motschman, Sr. The Shultz Family of Darke County, Ohio The Biography of James Wesley Shultz Son of William Sherman Shultz and Whilemena "Lillie" Mae Petersime by Francis D. Motschman, Sr. If there was one uncle in my wife's family that she and I was most fond of, it would be James Wesley Shultz. He was a good man and kind, quiet, observant and never did we ever hear an unkind word come from his mouth. His wife called him "Jimmie" and everyone else called him "Wes or Wesley". Wesley was born on Mon., October 30, 1899 in Ansonia, Darke County, Ohio. He married, Ina Marie Abernathy, rather young in life. She was born on Mon., September 3, 1900 and at the time he married her she was a "flapper", she was the life of the party and was with it for those times. She loved to hunt and many was the time when Wesley would come home from work, to a nice meal of squirrel or rabbit or quail that she had shot, cleaned and prepared. That was unusual even in this time. Wesley and Marie left Darke County to live in Dayton, Montgomery County, Ohio where he procurred a position in the factory at Frigidaire. He started out as a stock tracer, running down critical stock to keep the assembly lines running smoothly. He studied welding and eventually transferred to the welding department as a welder. Wesley worked there all his life. They both loved children but they would never have children of their own. Our son Michael used to walk past their house going to and from school. When he would be walking home for lunch Wesley would be out at the gate waiting. He would ask Mike if he'd like to have lunch with them and the offer was also for his buddy who was walking with him. If "Yes" was the answer, Marie would get on the phone and get permission from the parants and then the boys and they would have lunch together. The boys enjoyed it, they would exclaim to us later, " Boy, they had everything to eat, there. It was really nice." Having the boys stop in like that probably put a little zip in their day, too. Wesley and Marie were Spiritualists. Marie was a "Reader" and was kept busy in this endeaver. Wesley attained quite a reputation for his work as a "Healer"in the church and was also kept very busy in his labors. My wife and I had never had any experience with this method of healing until one day when I got home from work and my wife who had been in awful pain all day from a degenerated disk in her back. She had been to see a doctor about it and was told the only cure was to have the two disks fused. The doctor said that (at that time) there was only one doctor in Dayton who could do this operation and that the outcome was too uncertain. He advised against having the operation at that time. When I got home from work that day her face was drawn and she was fighting back the tears from all the pain she was having. "Please take me to my Uncle Wes'", she said, and we immediately drove over to their house. "Oh, honey", he said when he saw her, "why didn't you come here sooner". He sat her on a straight back chair and went on with his healing process. It took about 15 to 20 minutes and after he was finished, my wife looked at me and I could see that the tension was gone from her face and the pain had greatly subsided. It was my first experience and a very positive one. That was in the 1950's and she has never been bothered by this problem again. Wesley passed away Tue., September 30, 1969 and Marie died Sat., March 23, 1985 in Dayton, Montgomery County, Ohio. Shultz October 7 1901 - March 14 1978 ******************************************************* File contributed for Ohio Biographies Project by: Francis Motschman, Sr. dalesr99@earthlink.net July 24, 2003, 10:37 am Author: Francis D. Motschman, Sr. The Shultz Family of Darke County, Ohio The Biography of Mary M. Shultz Daughter of William Sherman Shultz and Whilemena "Lillie" Mae Petersime by Francis D. Motschman, Sr. The sixth child of Sherman and Lillie was a girl whom they named Mary M. Shultz. She was born on Mon., October 7, 1901. According to her brother Sherman, she caused him to get numerous spankings by doing things that he got blamed for. He couldn't remember any specific instances but he said she would do things that would appear to be something a boy would do, not a girl, so he would take the blame. She married William Hansen, Sr., the son of Hans Hansen and Anna in Gary, Indiana in 1921 and they had one child, a boy, William Hansen, Jr.. William Hansen, Jr. was born in Chicago, Illinois on Sat., June 30, 1923. William Hansen, Sr. was an expert wood carver. He loved to make little things that worked such as miniature ice tongs or a very, very small pair of scissors. William was not a well man for several years. This illness resulted in his death in November, 1953 in Ypsilanti, Michigan. After he died Mary worked for a number of Syrian people in the Ypsilanti, Ann Arbor area of Michigan. She was at home in this area, having spent most of her married life there. Mary had a knack of motivating people who were ill and getting them to put real effort into getting well. She became very well known for this in the Syrian Community and she always had a waiting list of places for her to visit. When she died, Tue., March 14, 1978 there was a large turnout of Syrian people at her funeral. They seemed genuinely sadened at her demise. Mary was one of the most unforgetable characters I have come across in my lifetime. After William, Sr. died she would visit the Dayton area about once a year and for some reason she liked to stay with my wife and I during these stays. Her stays would, generally last for about 2 months. When she would first get here she would amaze you with the way she did things. For instance, she would never go from one end of the house to the other without doing something else at the same time. Like take something with her to drop off on the way. If there was nothing to move she would grab a dust rag and dust things where ever she walked. I guess you would call her an efficiency expert. Efficiency experts can be very taxing. We loved seeing her come but we were just as happy to see her go, I'm sorry to say. William Hansen, Jr. married Barbara Jean Taylor of Lansing, Michigan, the daughter of, Lawrence Allen Taylor and Hildred Leone Sellers. Barbara was born on Sun., December 21, 1930, d. Sun., January 19, 1997 in Ypsilanti, Michigan. William and Barbara had five children., four boys and one girl. The boys are as follows: 1. Christopher Sherman Hansen, b. Xmas day, had a boy, Paul William Hansen b. Sun., July 8, 1990 in Ypsilanti, Michigan. 2. Glenn Michael Hansen, b. Thu., July 26, 1951, Ypsilanti, Michigan 3. Allen Gregory Hansen, b. Sun., August 23, 1953, Ypsilanti, Michigan 4. Mark William Hansen, b. Wed., November 2, 1955, Ypsilanti, Michigan 5. Deborah Jean Hansen, b. Wed., July 10, 1957, Ypsilanti, Michigan, m. Shultz September 18 1911 - May 8 2000 ******************************************************* File contributed for Ohio Biographies Project by: Francis Motschman, Sr. dalesr99@earthlink.net July 24, 2003, 10:49 am Author: Francis D. Motschman, Sr. The Shultz Family of Darke County, Ohio The Biography of Esther P. Shultz Daughter of William Sherman Shultz and Whilemena "Lillie" Mae Petersime by Francis D. Motschman, Sr. When my wife, Juanita Shultz was a little girl she had a gold mine, of sorts. It was the rage with her and all her little girl friends to cut out Movie Stars from magazines and form scrap books. Juanita's aunt owned a beauty shoppe... and guess who got all of the shoppes old magazines... you guessed it... Juanita did. Juanita's aunt was Esther P. Shultz. She was the eighth child born to Sherman and Lillie Shultz and was born on Mon., September 18, 1911. I believe that her mother and father thought she was going to be the last girl they would have and sort of spoiled her during her first few years. This is evidenced by a letter she wrote to them while she was in beauty school in Dayton, Ohio. The weather was just starting to turn nippy and she thought that they should have anticipated this and that they should have sent her her overcoat by mail. She was very sharp and irritated with them in the letter. I have the letter, I've read it and I know she wrote it to them but for the life of me I can't picture her writing that letter. The Esther I have always known was a rather quiet person, one who was always concerned about other people's feelings. Granted, though, I didn't know her until many years later and the spoiled little girl had long since diaappeared leaving a very sweet compasionate person in her place. She met and married Harold Doty Abt. 1930 and they had their first born, Wanda Doty on Fri., June 12, 1931. They also had two boys, Jake Doty, Abt. 1940 and Jack Doty, Abt. 1943. Harold was a very likable man, a barber, and had a voice that would make you think he should have been a radio announcer, it was so deep and was so resonant. He was glib as well and these qualities combined came to play a big part in his next occupational venture... selling for Fuller Brush. He was a very successful salesman for Fuller Brush winning many awards from them. Later on, right out of the blue, he quit them and started another career selling Electrolux Sweepers. He won many awards from them also plus many free trips abroad. He became a distributer for them and was successful in that also. As he got older the fire just wasn't there and he longed for the days when he was a barber. When he longed for something he went after it and the next thing you know, sweepers were in his past and he is the owner of a barber shop in Eaton, Ohio. On Wed., September 25, 1974, my wife and I went to Cincinnati, Ohio to attend a program that was put on by the famous healer, Evangelist, Kathryn Kulman. I had been having some back problems and we wanted to see if I could get some relief. On our way back from the program we were driving up I-75 towards Dayton. I smelled alcohol and I mentioned it to my wife. She said that she had been smelling it too, but just hadn't said anything. We had a Ford Station Wagon and I thought, maybe some drunk got in our car and is laying behind the seats, so I pulled off onto the berm and got out and checked. There was nothing. We didn't think anything more about it. After a while I told my wife that the next exit we would be coming to would be the one going to Middletown and Fairfield, if she wanted to stop and see Esther and Harold. She declined, saying that it was too late to be dropping in on them. Just a short time later the alcohol odor turned to the fragrance of flowers. We both remarked about it, thinking it very strange. When we got home and got out of the car you could hear the phone ringing in the apartment. We rushed in to answer it before they hung up. It was my mother-in-law, she said that she had been trying to get us all evening to tell us that Harold Doty had died. We thought this may be the answer to the strange smells. Maybe, maybe not. When Wanda got married Esther, who was an excellent seamstress, made the suits and all of the gowns for the wedding. A monstrous job for one person, but she did it and they were all beautiful. Harold continued with his barber business until he died on Wed., September 25, 1974. Esther lived until Mon., May 8, 2000. They are both buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Fairfield, Ohio This file has been created by a form at http://www.poppet.org/bios/ohbios/ File size: 4.7 Kb ______________________________ ------------------------------ X-Message: #4 Date: 24 Jul 2003 14:52:45 -0000 From: OHBIOS To: OH-FOOTSTEPS-L@rootsweb.com Message-ID: <20030724145245.32554.qmail@mail.best1-host.com> Subject: [OH-FOOT] Ohbios-Darke Co. Motschman, Sr. The Shultz Family of Darke County, Ohio The Biography of Emma V. Shultz Daughter of William Sherman Shultz and Whilemena "Lillie" Mae Petersime by Francis D. Motschman, Sr. The last child born to Sherman & Lillie Shultz. She came into their life on Sun., April 12, 1914. They would name her Emma Viola Shultz. Emma lived with them until she married John Beachler in the spring of 1939. He was born on Tue., October 5, 1909. His parents were W. Earl Beachler and Bertha of LaFeyette, Indiana. Things were still very tough even though the great depression was in its waning days. John was an all A student in high school but suffered from extreme shyness. He was never good in interviews because of this and he tried other means to find a job. He especially tried to get a "Railroad Inspectors" position, by mail, but never made it. They some how managed to buy a small farm just outside of Rossburg, Darke County, Ohio and spent most of their married life working that farm. Emma took care of the house and the live stock which included milking the cows. John took care of planting, maintenance and harvesting the crops. They never had children and it's probably a good thing because they never did much more than eke out a living on the farm. I remember many family picnics at the home of Emma's brother, Sherman Harold Shultz, in Laura, Ohio. Emma and John would come and bring Rickie, Earl's widow, from Ansonia. Rickie would mingle, but not have much to say. Emma would be all over, talking to everyone... John would get a chair as far away from the crowd as he could. He would watch and sometimes smile. If you went over and sat next to him he was a good conversationalist and was very interested in the stock car racing at Rossburg. John was strickened with cancer and lost his battle on Thu., July 15, 1976 in St. Elizabeth Hospital, Dayton, Montgomery Co., Ohio. He was buried in the Ansonia Cemetery, Ansonia, Darke Co., Ohio. Emma then did the only thing she could do... she sold the farm. She sold it for cash, in the form of cash and a note, and a run down house in Ansonia. The house was in bad shape but she thought it was wonderful because it had electricity and a bathroom. We came to Ansonia to see the house and she kept saying "Look", and smile and flip the light switch on the wall, on and off. While she lived there she delivered papers for the Greenville Advocate. They delivered the papers to her home and she would get them ready for delivery, stack them in a childs play wagon, and off she'd go making her deliveries. She was also an active member of The First Church of God of Ansonia, on SR118. She tought Sunday School there and absolutely loved working with the children. In the spring of 1990 Emma had a bad stroke that left her paralyzed and unable to talk or swallow properly. Her brother Sherman was trying to take care of her needs and sign papers for her and it was making a nervous wreck of him. I asked if maybe it would help both of them if I would be her Power Of Attorney. They both agreed and I saw her attorney in Greenville and he drew up the papers. As her Power of Attorney I was advised by her doctors that she would never be better than she was at that time. I was having to pay money out of her account every month to the nursing home and sometimes to doctors. She was running out of money. I determined that her only recourse was to sell her home. This turned out to be the best of times and the worst of times for my wife and I. Emma's house was a warehouse of yardsale purchases. She slept in a chair in the living room because all of the bedrooms were full of clothes, tableclothes, bedspreads, just everything you could imagine. One bedroom was so full we had to take the door off to get into the room. My wife and I went to Ansonia every day for a couple of weeks getting rid of all the things our "pack rat" had brought into the house. It was going through all of this stuff where we found out things about her and John that we never knew. For instance we found all of John's report cards from High School... all A's. We found the letters that he had written trying to get the Railroad Inspector's job. We also found receipts showing purchases made by Emma. She had bought a used car for a lady who needed one badly although she, herself, didn't own a car. Another lady with a number of children needed a new washing machine... Emma bought her a brand new one. On the same receipt was the purchase of a used one that Emma purchased for herself. Emma ended up on welfare at the nursing home but I'm sure she was wealthy when she got to heaven. Emma went to receive her reward on Mon., November 23, 1998. She is buried next to John in the Ansonia Cemetery, Ansonia, Darke County, Ohio.
