GOULD, of Winchester Times, has a bran new "gal baby." F. A. MARBLE, of Columbus, has been elected Great Sac_em of the Improved Order of Red Men. John C. SCOTT, a well known citizen of Chillicothe from 1831 to 1846, died in Philadelphia, on 3rd inst. The wife of Dennis OGLE, Superintendent of Ross County Infirmary, died on 5th inst., of typhoid fever. J. D. KIRKPATRICK, Superintendent of construction of Gallipolis, Mc Arthur and Columbus Railroad, for two years, died at Urbana, on 3rd inst., of pneumonia. The greater part of his life had been spent in railroad building. Peter MURPHY, the well known contractor, of Columbus, died on 10th inst., of pneumonia, aged 48 years. He was born in Ireland, came to Columbus twenty five years ago, and was first employed as a laborer on a turnpike. He leaves an estate of $75,000 or more. Mrs. Mary GILMORE, wife of Col. William Y. GILMORE, died in Chillicothe, on 10th inst., of pneumonia. She was born in that place in 1806, was a daughter of Joseph TIFFIN, a niece of Governor Edward TIFFIN, and lived her whole life in Chillicothe, raising a large family of children. The wife of William HUFFMAN, of New Burlington, Greene county, committed suicide, last Tuesday, by shooting herself with a revolver. Temporary insanity the cause. The Hocking Sentinel says, suit has been entered against Cap. MYERS under the ADAIR law for selling whisky to John COCHRAN, the man killed in a drunken row by JONES at Union Furnace. Damages claimed $5,000. At West Jefferson, Madison county, last Tuesday evening, a horrible death, by coal oil, occurred. As the wife of William STRATTON was attending to her domestic duties, a small child upset the coal oil lamp. She picked it up and it exploded in her hand, throwing a flame of fire over her, which consumed her clothes and caused almost instant death. She was found shortly after her death by her husband. Mrs. LAW, wife of John LAW, of Madison township, died on Sunday and was buried on Monday. Jacob MIDDLETON died in Bloomingburg on Friday last, aged 81 years. Austin CARPENTER, was attacked with hemorrhage of the lungs, while on the way to the wedding of his sister, in Ames township, Athens county, on 4th inst., and died in fifteen minutes. In Greene county Superior Court, on 13th inst., a verdict of $4,500 was granted Mrs. John BOWER, against the Little Miami Railroad, for the killing of her husband. This was the third trial. A. J. CRYDER, of Ross county, has been appointed by the Board of Public Works. Superintendent of the Southern Division of the Ohio Canal. The Cincinnati Commercial calls Hon. Milt MCCOY, Representative from Ross, the honest farmer from the hills of Kinnickinnick. Ed. M. REYNOLDS, of Columbus, has been appointed Passenger and Land Agent of the Missouri River, Fort Scott and Gulf railroad. Hon. E. A. GUTHRIE, of Athens, has resigned his position as Common Pleas Judge, and formed a law partnership with MCCLINTICK & SMITH, of Chillicothe. The Sheriff's election contest in Guernsey county has resulted in favor of Wm. P. HARTLEY, the incumbent, elected last fall, on the Democratic Reform ticket. Daniel MARTIN, a prominent citizen of Greene county, and fourteen years Associate Judge of that county, under old Constitution, died at Xenia, 28th ult., in his 72nd year. William A. WAYLAND, late Treasurer of Ross county, and Ed. P. VANMETER, have formed a partnership in the dry goods business, at the old Carson stand Chillicothe. A. B. HUGHS, of Mt. Sterling has bought of Lewis COOK, 194 acres of the old Isaac COOK farm in Madison township, Fayette county, near White Oak, at $45 per acre. Peter MERKLE, to whom the dining room of the new Columbus depot was let, has expended $6,000 in fitting up the apartments. The dining hall will seat one hundred persons and the lunch room seventy-five.
