He was 95. Mr. Guillet, known as "Cap," had been in serious condition since suffering a stroke after a fall in his home a month ago. Once a powerful six feet tall and weighing 200 pounds, he was fragile and suffering, from failing eyesight and memory when he died. His memory had been remarkable. Akron had less than 8,000 persons when he came here in 1867 as a child. He was born in Canada April 27, 1859. He lived at 46 Marvin av. The old Ohio-Pennsylvania Canal ran down Main st. when he came to Akron. The police station was near the southeast corner of Howard and Federal sts. and had only two cells. Mr. Guillet attended a one-story brick building where Portage Path School is now "There was only a wagon track through the hazel brush from there to Exchange st." As a young man he worked for two years at the B.F. Goodrich Co. plant. He believed he was the only one in Akron of this period who worked under the company's founder, the late Dr. Goodrich. Mr. Guillet operated a store for a time and in 1890 he joined the Akron Police Force, then numbering only 12 men. By that time the city jail had been moved to where the akron Saving & Loan Co. is now and had four cells. Mr. Guillet had the distinction of putting the first prisoner aboard Akron's first paddy wagon an electric type job which he believed was the first police car of its kind in the world. That was just before the turn of the century. In 1899 he was appointed captain of the department, a post he held until his retirmenet in May 1918. For 10 years after that he was a police office for the old National City Bank. Mr. Guillet was the oldest living Mason in Akron. He was a member of Akron Lodge 83, F&AM; Washington Chapter 18, Royal Arch Mason; Akron Council 80, Royal and select Masters; Akron Commandery 25, Knights Templar, and Tadmor Temple of the Shrine. He was also a charter member of the Odd Fellows Lodge here. Mr. Guillet's wife Sylvia, died in May 1951. He leaves a nephew, George Guillet of Noblesville, Ind. and a niece, Mrs. Myrtle Bowman of Mt. Rainier, Md. Services are being arranged at the Long Funeral Home.
