MCVEY and his wife Ann aged respectively seventy-seven and seventy-two years, an old couple who for some time past have been living at the second toll-gate on the Circleville turnpike, near Hopetown about six miles north of Chillicothe, were found murdered at their home at about twelve o'clock Friday night. Two men supposed to be tramps entered the house by a back window and went through the sleeping room of the aged couple to the front part of the house used as a small grocery. A girl named Alice Dean aged 14 years, who has been living with the McVey's for three years past, was awakened by the report of a pistol and had presence of mind enough to get under the bed, secreting herself until the murders had finished their work by firing both beds in the house and going back to the kitchen when she leaped through a window and alarmed the neighbors who soon arriving burst open the front door and found the dead body of Mr. McVey on the floor with a bullet hole in his breast and that of Mrs. McVey with a ball through her head and one through the breast. The object of the murders was to secure a small amount of toll money supposed to be in the house; but investigation shows that they got nothing as three hundred and thirty-eight dollars were found in the house this morning all that is supposed to have been there. I am sure others would be happy to see them there. Or are they out of books that are copyrighted? By the way, do you have an Alonzo Lewis Baker in your family tree? He was my great great grandfather, born in Vermont or NY and died in Illinois.
