She was the daughter of Samuel Monterville McGruder and Mary Louisa Shaffer. Monterville was born September 29, 1846 in Winchester, Frederick Co., VA. He was the son of William L. and Sarah M. McGruder. Monterville was also the nephew of Major General John Bankhead McGruder, well known for his service during the Mexican and Civil wars. Louisa was the daughter of Dr. Jacob and Sarah (Inks) Shaffer. “Col. Monterville McGruder was a commissioned officer in Stonewall Jackson's brigade and served almost exclusively in secret service as a Confederate spy.” At the close of the war, he was released from the prison at Camp Chase near Columbus, Ohio. He settled in Blacklick and practiced his father’s trade of boot maker. This is where he met and married Mary Louisa Shaffer on November 22, 1865. Louisa McGruder died February 26, 1874. She is buried in the Seceder Cemetery (aka Old United Presbyterian Cemetery), Truro Twp., Franklin Co., OH. Monterville married Amelia C. Harris on April 11, 1875 in Licking Co., OH. Amy was born February 1855 in Hebron, Licking Co., OH. She was the daughter of Thomas and Lydia Harris. Thomas was a descendent of John Harris, founder of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Thomas died when Amy was two years old. Lydia married Elijah Durfey on August 16, 1859. Elijah played a major roll in raising Amy and her sister Martha. In the spring of 1877, the family moved to Austin, Travis Co., TX. Amy’s first child, Paul David McGruder, born January 29, 1877 in Blacklick, Franklin Co., OH, died there on May 23, 1878. He is buried in the Oakwood Cemetery. In November 1878, they moved to Pettis Co., MO, and one year later settled in Hugesville. Addie’s brother, Mark Austin McGruder, and sister, Mayme Belle McGruder, were born there on September 16, 1879 and September 1883 respectively. Mark became a lawyer and law author. He was also author of the 1919 edition of The History of Pettis County, Missouri. Mayme married Norman M. Gilbert and raised a family. Addie returned to Columbus, Ohio between 1880 and 1887. The city directories show her as a cashier and assistant bookkeeper for the J. P. Weisman Company. She lived with her uncle, Dr. William H. H. Shaffer. In 1893, Addie married Stephen Stowell Gaines. Stephen was born December 19, 1863 in Blacklick, Franklin Co., OH. He was the son of Phillip Walton and Permelia (Stowell) Gaines. Permelia died giving birth to Stephen and he was raised by his grandmother, Sarah (Mills) Stowell, the widow of Stephen Stowell. Stephen Gaines was a telegraph operator. Addie and Stephen remained married until his death on December 9, 1926. On November 6, 1928, Addie married Albert Absalom Rhodes in Columbus, Franklin Co., OH. Albert was born May 5, 1862 in Havens Corners, Franklin Co., OH. He was the son of Henry J. and Rebecca F. (Scott) Rhodes. He was the widow of Abigail A. Clouse who died in 1907. Albert had 6 children from his marriage to Abbie. Addie died December 6, 1934 in Columbus, Franklin Co., OH. She is buried in the Silent Home Cemetery, Truro Twp., Franklin Co., OH. Albert died in 1941. Monterville died November 23, 1904 and Amy died November 24, 1911. Monterville and Amy are buried in the Crown Hill Cemetery, Sedalia, Pettis Co., MO. Addie never had children. Additional Comments: Attached is a biography I wrote about one of my ancestors. She was the granddaughter of Dr. Jacob Shaffer, who's biography is already on your site. Looks like I need to submit an updated biography for Jacob. I'll work on it. HOLCOMB, editor and proprietor. Vinton, Gallia County, Ohio Terms: Per annum, in advance - $1.50 Advertising done at liberal rates. Thursday, January 22, 1857 Huntington Township This is one of the best agricultural townships in Gallia county. A brief sketch of its early settlement, as we received it from one of the early settlers, may not be uninteresting to some of our readers. The first house built was in the summer or fall of 1804, by Capt. George TYLER, on section thirty-six, and is the farm upon which Mr. John VIERS now lives. The second house built was by Gen. Samuel R. HOLCOMB, on section twenty-four, into which he moved with his family, consisting of a wife and two children, on the 9th of April, 1805, and upon which section the town of Vinton is located. The third house was built by Major John ROBINSON on section twelve, in the spring of 1805, and is now the farm of Mr. Milton KENT. The fourth house was built by Mr. Joseph McKNIGHT, on section twenty-seven, in the summer of 1805, and is the farm upon which Mr. John WALLACE now lives. The fifth house was built by William KNOX, on section thirty-six, in the summer of 1805, and is the farm now owned by Mr. William RIDGWAY, and occupied by John McDANIEL and Isaac TYLER. The sixth house was built by Mr. William GLENN, on section twenty-five, in the fall of 1805, where is now the farm of one of his sons, Mr. Andrew Y. GLENN. Wm. BURRIS and the late Judge Hugh POOR, of Jackson county, came to the township in the summer of 1806, and located on section thirty-five on Little Raccoon, where is now the farm of Mrs. Lucy WOODRUFF. The same year, David McDANIEL built a house on section twenty-six, at the forks of the Raccoon, on the farm now owned by John PIERCE. Enoch RUSSELL, and John DICKERSON , built houses on section twenty-seven, on the farm now owned by Mr. Abel JACOBS, in the year 1807. About the same time David KEETON located on the farm now owned by Mr. Abraham DUPRE. In 1808 Andrew EWING and Mrs. Tamar WALLACE located on section twenty-three. In the spring of 1809 Mr. Matthew EDMISTON and William WOODS moved to the farms on which they now live. In the fall of 1809 William EWING located on section eleven, at what was known to hunters as the "Rack," and is where the village of Ewington is situate. It is now fifty-two years since the settlement of the township commenced; it now contains over 1,600 inhabitants, who for intelligence and moral worth will compare with the people of any township in the county. One thing is worthy of remark, at least, there has never been an indictment found, nor a citizen of the township arraigned, tried or convicted of a Penitentiary crime or offence.
