He was born May 11, 1762, in Blanford, Hampshire County, Masachusetts. While he was a resident of New York he enlisted and served in New York troops as follows: one month, August, 1778, in Captain Van Alstyne's company, Colonel John Harper's regiment; from September, 1779, six weeks in Captain McGonegal's company, Colonel Beebe's regiment; from March, 1780, in Captain Walter Vrooman's company, Colonel John Harper's regiment. He was transferred in May 1780, to Captain Titus' company. Colonel Weissenfel's regiment, in which he served nine months and fifteen days; from March, 1781, he served nine months in Captain Holt Dunham's company, Colonel McKinstry's regiment; from January, 1782 until the latter part of 1782, he was in Captain Job Wright's company, Colonel Marinus Willett's regiment In 1792 he moved to Bainbridge, Chenango, County, New York; in 1808 he moved to Marcellus, Onondaga County, New York; and in 1823 he moved to Cuyahoga County, Ohio. In December, 1845, he had moved to Orangeville, Wyoming County, New York to live with a son.
