This Ad Was Run For Three Consecutive Weeks Beginning On May 22, 1828. May 22, 1828 In the latter part of the year 1817, my daughter Dorcis Rice, with her four young children, viz: Abigail, Olive, Tryphena (who had not the use of her limbs) and Mary, left my then residence, at Homer, in the state of New York, with her husband Jonathan Rice, who was one of that sect since known by the name of Modern Pilgrims and was going as he said to the promised land. Since that time we have not heard anything from them, except that the public papers have informed us that the company have been on the Mississippi River. The absence and unknown fate of this family have been indeed painful to the relatives and aged parents of the said Jonathan Rice, who reside in this pace. And what must be my own feelings, and those of her brothers and sisters, to reflect on the condition of an helpless female in such circumstances, I leave to the philanthropist to judge: And I humbly request any person that can give any information of all or anyone of the above named family to communicate the same to me at Greene, Trumbull county, Ohio; or to the Post Master of Greensburgh P. O. at the above named place, which will be thankfully received. Elijah Wakefield Additional Comments: The Rice and Wakefield families referred to in the article had been in Brompton, Quebec, Canada, prior to settling in Trumbull County, Ohio. The child Abigail referred to in the article is believed to be the only surviving child of Jonathan and Dorcas (Wakefield) Rice and ended up as an orphan in Natchez, Mississippi. She married William Ratcliff on 29 Dec. 1825, in Amite County, Mississippi. They later moved to Yazoo County, Mississippi, and about 1839 to Texas (Tyler County). A website is being constructed about the Pilgrims referred to in the article: http://www.sidneyrigdon.com/features/pilgrim1.htm File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/oh/trumbull/newspapers/lostchil77nw.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.poppet.org/ohfiles/ File size: 2.5 Kb -------------------------------- End of OH-FOOTSTEPS-D Digest V06 Issue #19 ******************************************
