Wilson celebrated their golden wedding anniversary at their home 1 ½ miles west of Canfield. Fifty years ago, April 28, 1859, Robert M. Wilson of Canfield and Miss Catherine E. Maurer of Youngstown township were united in marriage in Warren, O., by Rev. Everett, Calvin Ewing being groomsman and Miss Roxy Warner bridesmaid. Among those present in the bridal party were P.C. and Alex Maurer, brothers of the bride, William, Mary and Maggie Wilson, brother and sisters of the groom, and Miss Rose Squires, now Mrs. H. A. Manchester. Mr. Manchester and his wife were the only guests present at the wedding anniversary who attended the wedding fifty years ago. The guests to the number of 50 with the exception of the family physician, Dr. D. Campbell, and wife, were composed only of near relatives among whom were the following accompanied by their wives: H. A. and R. A. Manchester, Hugh Stuart, Porter and Samuel McNeilly, James Park, Samuel Dickson, Henry Hartman and Albert Bradley; Mrs. W. Calhoun, Mrs. Wm. Pennell, Mrs. Nettie Maurer, Mrs. Martha Fowler and Mrs. Frank Fitch. After an elaborate 6 o’clock dinner H. A. Manchester presented to Mr. and Mrs. Wilson in behalf of their guests, a number of valuable presents, in a speech which Mr. Manchester alone knows how to make, and which contained some reminiscences of that bright sunshiny day of fifty years ago. Four children came to bless this union: W. C. Wilson and Mrs. C. H. Hine of Canfield, C. J. Wilson of Greenford and Mrs. G. D. Kimmel of North Jackson. Robert Wilson was born in Canfield Feb. 25, 1834, of Scotch-Irish parents Jno. And Jane Wilson, who emigrated to this country in 1828, and with his father, his brother William and a sister, the mother of H. A. Manchester, who followed in 1832, James Stuart, who came in 1838, and Wm. Trimble who came in 1850, settled in Canfield township near the place to which was given and which still retains the name of Dublin. In the early sixties, when the gold fever was at its height in California, Mr. Wilson with his brother-in-law, the late, P. C. Maurer, the late Col. Wm. Brown of New York, Geo. Wetzel, the Lanterman boys and others went by boat down the Ohio and up the Mississippi rivers to St. Louis, Mo., from where they went by prairie schooner and on horseback into the then wild west guided by that famous government scout, “old” Bridger, who guided them through a new country never before traveled by white men and over a trail since known as “Bridger’s cut-off.” Mr. Wilson has always been a farmer and stock dealer by occupation with the exception of about ten or twelve years during which time he was engaged in the meat trade. A life-long democrat, he was a candidate for office but once, in 1869, when he was elected assessor of Austintown township, when that township contained but one precinct and was overwhelmingly republican. Notwithstanding this fact he was elected by a large majority and discharged the duties of the office well. Mrs. Wilson was born March 3, 1841, and is one of a family of nine children being the daughter of Jacob and Lena Maurer (nee Troxel) who were of German extraction with a tinge of Scotch-Irish on the side of the Troxels, and who came to Ohio from Pennsylvania about 1844. Like most Germans Mrs. Wilson is an economical and thrifty disposition and in a large measure to this disposition, and to the thrift and energy of the Scotch-Irish blood of Mr. Wilson they have accumulated a competency for their declining years, being possessed of a well located farm, a modern home with up-to-date conveniences and a modest but sufficient income. May they enjoy in full the fruits of their labors and live to celebrate many more as pleasant anniversaries as was celebrated Wednesday afternoon. SQUIRE MANCHESTER - 50TH Wedding Anniversary 8 Nov 1909 Happily Married Half a Century Married, by the Rev. W. G. March at the home of the bride, November 8th, Miss Rose A. Squire and Mr. Hugh A. Manchester. The contracting parties are well known young people of Dublin and begin life’s journey together under the most flattering auspices.” An item of news intensely interesting to this community appeared in the Mahoning Sentinel in November, 1859, conveying the above intelligence to its readers. November the 8th, 1909, there gathered in the parlors of the Canfield Presbyterian church a host of friends, new and old, to celebrate with Hon. and Mrs. H.A. Manchester the fiftieth anniversary of their wedding. The transformed parlors were the scene of happy greetings and renewed good wishes for the bride and groom who led the way to the dining-room to the old yet always thrilling straits of Mendelssohn’s wedding march, rendered on violin and piano by Mr. and Mrs. L.A. Manchester. Seated at the bride’s table were twelve of the original wedding party, the bride and groom with Mr. W.G. Cassady, who was best man fifty years ago, Mrs. Elizabeth Smaltz, Mr. and Mrs. P.T. Jones, Mr. and Mrs. Benj. McGowen, Mrs. Laura Beardsley, Mrs. Margaret Hofius, Mr. Alex. Dickson and Mrs. Amos Russell. The wedding party on this occasion included also Mrs. Alex Dickson, Mrs. W.G. Cassady and Mr. Amos Russell. At four other tables, where white and golden-yellow chrysanthemums gave grace and cheer, were seated the family and friends to the number of ninety, who did abundant justice to the wedding dinner upon which Rev. Dr. William Dickson invoked the divine blessing. Toast time was in charge of Rev. Robert E. Pugh, present pastor of the happy couple, who, after expressing the untied good wishes of the entire company, introduced Mr. Cassady who told in brief of the original wedding and some memories not so remote. Dr. William Dickson, boyhood friend and life-long associate of Mr. and Mrs. Manchester, created much merriment in reminiscent mood of the favors jealously sought by the boys of the 1850’s from Miss Squire. Mr. John Martin spoke in appreciative strain of neighborhood relations, Dr. L.D. Coy of matters in civil life, Dr. D. Campbell of church associations and co-operation, the ministers of Canfield in recognition of high morality and Christian citizenship while the sons and daughters from memory’s books read of pleasing incidents of the old life on the farm west of town. The concluding testimony of these and others was that marriage is no failure, with an occasional marvel as to what a woman can make of a man. When the afternoon was far spent goodbyes were said and leave taken of a most delightful occasion which will live long as memory in the hearts of the entire company. Six of Mr. and Mrs. Manchester’s children are living: Mrs. E.P. Tanner and I.A. Manchester of Canfield; Mrs. C.E. Bowman of Ellsworth; W.C. Manchester of Detroit; Curtis A. and Leroy A. of Youngstown. There are eight grandchildren. During recent years kin of the Manchester’s have celebrated their golden weddings as follows: Mr. and Mrs. Martin Neff of Canfield, Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Wilson of Palmyra, Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin McGowen of Austintown. This not only shows longevity but non-belief in divorce. Tables: Besides those seated at the bride’s table were the following friends and kinsfolk: First Table – Mr. and Mrs. R.A. Manchester, Mrs. and Mrs. P.T. Jones, Mrs. Laura Beardsley, Mrs. Margaret Hofius, Mr. and Mrs. Benj. McGowen, Mr. and Mrs. Alex. Dickson, Mr. and W.G. Cassaday, Mrs. Elizabeth Smaltz, Mr. and Mrs. Amos Russell. Second Table – Dr. William Dickson, Rev. and Mrs. J.C. Schaaf, Rev. and Mrs. R.E. Pugh, Rev. and Mrs. R.J. Beard, Rev. and Mrs. D.D. Burt. Third Table – Mr. and Mrs. John Sanzenbacher, Mr. Almus Beardsley, Mr. and Mrs. Robert M. Wilson, Mrs. Margaret Kirk, Mr. and Mrs. Martha Fowler, Mrs. Adda Hine, Mrs. Julia Burbick. Manchester, Mr. and Mrs. D.L. Manchester, Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Stewart, Mr. and Mrs. Jas. Park, Mr. and H.M. Hunt, Mr. and Mrs. A Bradley, Mrs. Sophia Dickson, Mrs. R.J. Crockett. While the day was dark and gloomy without there was nothing but brightness and happiness within the Neff home. Near where they now reside this aged and respected couple have spent most of their lives. Both were born in Canfield township, Mr. Neff on March 25, 1827, and Mrs. Neff July 14, 1830, making their ages 81 and 78 years, respectively. Mrs. Neff’s maiden name was Catherine Wilson, being a daughter of John Wilson, one of the early settlers of Dublin, this township, who afterwards lived almost directly across the street from the present Neff homestead and it was there in what afterwards was known as the “old red house”, and which in another location now serves as a barn, the happy couple was united in marriage, the ceremony being performed April 5, 1848, Rev. Evrett of Poland officiating. Five children blessed this union, three of whom survive - Mrs. Caroline Beard of New Buffalo, John E. Neff and Mrs. Lois Edsall of Canfield. Industry and thrift have all their lives marked the pathway of Mr. and Mrs. Neff; always busy, happy and contented, enjoying to the full the quiet of their country home. That Mr. Neff has prospered, with the assistance of his helpmeet, is shown by the fact that he is perhaps the wealthiest farmer and stock dealer in Canfield township. He is still hale and hearty and his wife enjoys fairly good health and they have promise of celebrating many more wedding anniversaries. Besides the children named above, Mr.and Mrs. Neff have ten grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, all of whom with several other guests, were present to enjoy the sumptuous dinner and the pleasures incident to the sixtieth wedding anniversary.
