Jenkins November 27, 1823 in Jackson Co., Ohio. + 19 x. Jesse Radabaugh, born 1796; died Abt. 1846 in Jackson Co., Ohio. Generation No. 3 10. Mary Barbara3 Radabaugh (Catherine2 Buzzard, Henry Buzzard1 (Bossart)) was born 1788 in Pendleton Co., VA., and died August 19, 1839. She married John Horton 1808 in Kanawha Co., VA., son of Joseph Horton. Notes for Mary Barbara Radabaugh: Mary Barbara ("Polly") Radabaugh, daughter of Henry and Catharine Buzzard. Born in 1788 (possibly 19 August) in Pendleton County, VA. She married John Horton in 1808 in Kanawha County, VA (by the Rev. John Lee). John was also born in VA., on 15 October 1788. John was the son of Joseph Horton, a Revolutionary War veteran. The couple moved to southern Ohio in 1811. On 18 January 1812, John and Henry Radabaugh (his father-in-law) bought 168.6 acres in what was to become Sec. 3, Madison Twp., Jackson Co., OH. They paid $84.80 and had a balance due of $253.20 at the land office in Chillicothe [Ohio Auditor of State: Land Office, Columbus]. This was the SW ? of Sec. 3. They divided this land east and west, with Henry and Catharine taking the west half and John and Polly taking the east half. John and Polly lived on this 80 for from 11-16 years. On 29 December 1828 they sold it [A:596]. By looking over the censuses of 1820 and 1830, it appears that they had about 11 children. Two of these children (one boy and one girl) were born 1808-1810. Five others (three boys and two girls) were born 1811-1820. Two others (one boy and one girl) were born 1821-1825. The final two (both girls) were born 1826-1830. The two oldest were definitely born before John and Polly got the Sec. 3 farm. One other may also have been born before. At least seven were born on the Sec. 3 place. The eleventh child was either born on that farm or not long after they moved onto Sec. 4, Jefferson Twp., Jackson Co.* The 1820 census shows the family, as expected, in Madison Twp. All subsequent censuses find them in Jefferson Twp. According to records from the Ohio Land Office, John Horton bought the west half of Sec. 4, Jefferson Twp.--320 acres--in four 80 acre purchases between 1823 and 1837. On 15 December 1823, he and Polly bought the E ? of the SW ?, the first of the 80 acre purchases. This was five years before they sold the Madison Twp. farm. For those five years I presume they farmed both places. The distance between them was about 8? miles. They may have moved to Jefferson Twp. sometime before 1828: in which case the birth places of the children would change accordingly. Just before they sold the Madison Twp. farm--on 28 October 1828--they bought the adjoining W ? of the SW ? of Sec. 4 in Jefferson Twp. By then they had definitely moved to Jefferson Twp. Then, on 27 December 1831 they bought the W ? of the NW ?. And finally, on 23 June 1837, they bought the E ? of the NW ?. Polly died in 1839, at the age of 51, and is buried in the Horton Cemetery, Sec. 5, Jefferson Twp. The stone shows her given name, Mary. The 1840 census shows John, now without Polly of course, with five children still at home--two male children now full-grown men, and three teenage girls. Sometime between 1840 and 1848 John remarried (or so I think) to Sarah__?__. On 20 November 1848 John and Sarah sold 100 acres in Sec. 4 to Lewis Horton. This was the NW ? of the NW ? plus 60 acres off the north end of both the SW ? (of the NW ?) and the SE ? (of the NW ?) [J:502]. Lewis Horton is a son of John and Polly. Lewis married Anna Radabaugh, daughter of Jesse and Elizabeth (Arthur). Thus Lewis and Anna were first cousins (and this must be the point at which the larger family first started losing its genetic bearings; leading eventually to runny noses, baldness, rosacea, chocoholism, and other ills doled out by an indifferent Nature). The censuses of 1850 and 1860 find John and Sarah, in Jefferson Twp., with no children at home. Sarah is shown as the same age as John--i.e., born in 1788. John died on 6 June 1869, at 81 years of age. He is also buried in the Horton Cemetery. His will [Jackson County Case #1455] mentions his wife Sarah. A son, Henry, is also mentioned--along with Henry's wife, Nancy. Henry and Nancy received 183 acres. Land-wise, then, the will covered everything except the NE ? of the NW ?. I did not find in the records just how this was disposed of. The will stipulated that when Henry and Nancy died, their land would go to two grandchildren--William H. and Henry F. (I don't otherwise know who these children were.) Others mentioned in the will were: James, William, Lewis, Mary Horton, Catharine Martin, Eleanor Davis, Nancy Shoemaker, and Rebecca McDaniel. A Nathan Burnsides was also mentioned. This was a son-in-law (see *). We may have the names, then, of nine of the 11 children of John and Polly. Since we started with six boys and five girls, and five girls are named in the will, the two missing were boys*. Since Sarah is mentioned in the will, she outlived John. She was 81 when John died. I don't know when she died or where she is buried. Perhaps she spent the rest of her days on the NE? of the NW?. Joseph Horton, John's father, is also buried in the Horton Cemetery. His name appears on the gravestone without any dates (at least ones that are legible). Also inscribed are the words, "Va. Troops, Rev. War." *--From Monte Bussard's book, which I looked over after the "struggles" above, the names of John and Polly's children are: 1. James: born 7 October 1808. Married (1st) Sarah Stephenson and (2nd) Mary J. Stewart. 2. Susanna: born 1810. Married Nathan Burnsides. 3. Joseph, Jr.: born 1812. Married Mary Stephenson. 4. Catharine: born 1814.
