I was told that the Breckneck Cemetery was not always where it is today and that it was moved to make room for a road. I don't know if this is true or not. *************************************************************************** Additional Information contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by James C. Storch jstorch@worldnet.att.net April 26, 2000 *************************************************************************** I read your comments about the moving of Breakneck Cemetery in Kent, Ohio. That is absolutely true. I lived in Kent for 49 years before moving to NC 4 years ago. The cemetery used to be along Ohio Hwy 59 just east of Kent State University and very close to Breakneck Creek. I don't remember exactly if the cemetery was moved for the route 261 by-pass, a new building for KSU, part of it's parking lot or a combination of all of these. All of the graves were moved to a very nice site behind Standing Rock Cemetery on route 43N near the Cuyahoga river. (There actually is a huge rock about the size of a dump truck standing right in the middle of the river. Supposedly, the Native Americans in the Portage Co. area used the top of the rock for some of their ceremonies.) It is a reading from 1990, but they used a previous reading from 1931 to determine missing stones. If you send me your snail mail address, I'd be glad to send you a copy. BTW, it says they were moved in 1970. On a humorous note, one of our friends knows some people who worked at the K-Mart in the past. They would tell her of weird things going on with the lighting, etc. - which fits in with the theory of some that they didn't get all the people buried there when they moved it! Look forward to hearing from you, Dave and Jan *************************************************************************** Additional Information contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by April 30, 2000 *************************************************************************** This is in regard to your listing of Breakneck Cemetery, Franklin Twp., Portage Co., Oh. on GenWeb. As one of the persons who worked for over 2 years reading all Franklin Twp. cemetery stones and helping compile Volume I of Franklin Twp. Cemeteries.[& in which this cemetery is listed], I want to correct your comment & that of James Storch concerning the former location of this small cemetery. Breakneck Creek is located somewhere near, but not that close, however at some point the cemetery became known as Breakneck Cemetery. It was formerly known as Shirtliff Family Cemetery. The first burial was in 1839; last burial in 1916. The cemetery was located on a hill abt 300 yrds from Rte. 59 and & a little west of Rhodes Rd. in Franklin Twp. The remains were reintered in Standing Rock Cemetery in 1970 because the land was sold to K-Mart, where a K-Mart store was ultimately built very close to the original cemetery. [part of the old cemetery is now paved over & the garden center of this K-Mart store sits on part of the land.] My information does not need to be entered in the GenWeb site, however It would be a good idea to correct your own comment.
