Brother Oldfather was of original Reformed stock. His parents were Henry and Catharine Oldfather of Somerset Co., Pennsylvania. He was born May 24, 1804, and removed to Ohio with his parents when he was only four years old. In 1808 he settled near Germantown, Ohio, where he lived until he had grown to full manhood, when he removed to Harrison Township, a few miles west of Lewisburg, Preble County. Here he lived upward of forty years. He was married to Julia Pence, sister of Rev. John Pence. This union was blessed with nine children. A son and daughter preceded him to the better land. The former died on the battlefield, doing service to his country, during the late war. The daughter died in the West. Brother Oldfather reared his family to be men and women of the highest respectability and women of the highest respectability and social standing. One son, Jeremiah, is a missionary at Oorumiab, Persia. At an early age Brother Oldfather joined the Reformed Church, and continued a faithful and devoted member until death. The last thirty-five years he was ruling elder in the Church. How sadly we will miss our venerable father in the counsels of the Church. His place in the sanctuary was never vacant unless caused by sickness. His house was his pastor's home. His charities to benevolence were liberal. His whole heart went out toward the Church and her institutions. No one knew him but to love him. "Blessed are the dead that die in the Lord", can be truly said of him. His summons was sudden and unexpected; yet not unwelcome. He died in the triumphs of faith and the blessed hope of immortality. His funeral was largely attended. A sermon was preached by his pastor, from IL Thess. iv. 13, 14. He rests in peace. H.M.H. ------ A Tribute by Mrs. Lydia Holmes. Lines for the Reformed congregation of Millville, Ohio, in memory of our dearly beloved pastor, Rev. W. H. Fenneman: 'Tis but a few short weeks since we Assembled here at duty's call, To pay our last respects to one Who had endeared himself to all. And while our church still wears the badge Of mourning, for its honored dead, This tribute, written in his praise, Our hearts would o'er his memory spread. Our pastor, in the years gone by, His willing services had given, As day by day he sought to lead Our souls away from earth to heaven. Our children, "christened," by his hand, Daughters and sons by him "confirmed," Duty to God and to his church, They from his loving counsel learned. Our social joys, he shared with us, As brother, minister, and friend; Oh, may we meet in that blest world, Where friendships have no more an end; When sorrows came, as come they will, And we were left our way to grope, 'Twas he, as "messenger of Christ," Inspired our souls with faith and hope. But in God's word we read that blest Are they, who in the Lord have died; They rest from labor, and their works, That in the Master's name they tried, Will follow them, a monument Outlasting any earthly stone, Or words of praise that man can give, The Savior's plaudit of "Well done." Oh, that we all may so fill up The measure of our days below, That when we reach the other shore, That word on us He may bestow. Pastor and people may we there Unite in one glad song of praise, To Him who purchased for our souls Eternal life and endless days. Indianapolis, Indiana --------- Certificate Every little bee doth help to fill The hive with honey sweet; Although the load is very small, It often they repeat. But then you see so many bees, Together in one hive dwell, When all contribute their little mite, It fills the empty cell. Thus it is in all great tasks, We undertake to do; The little mites doth greatly help, To swell the number too. For like the bees if all but add A trifle to the list, You ne'er will fell the little loss, And yet it will assist. So, young friends, you must not think, Your gift however small, Will never help to roll along, Education's glorious ball.
