How is Uncle Jay and Uncle Chester, how is Uncle Chet's wife and GrandPapa Barnhizer how many horses have you got. how many hogs have you got? We sold 19 yesterday. We got $25 per hundred weight. 10 April pigs and now we have 6 head of horses. We haven't got any corn cribed [sic]. The Republicans are going to have an ox roast. You had better come out and have a good time. The weather is very cold. It is snowing but we are ready for winter. We have got 20 bushels of apples for eating, we have got 40 gallons of cider for drinking. We are going to get our pictures taken. We are going to have a family shot. We have got 10 kind of cats, we have one that we call Goldbug. I will be 9 years of age next Friday. Are there many gass [sic] wells where you live? Flory and I are going to school. We have the 4th reader and spelling book, Arithmetic and Geography. Our teacher's name is Mrs. White. Mrs. Rachel Hickey went to Toledo to get a cancer taken out. She hasn't fully recovered yet. It was an inward cancer. We think Aunt Rose is pretty. From your Grandson Chester Additional Comments: Chester Defay, Martha Floy [FLory] and Kingdon Eli Barnhizer were children of Thomas Jefferson and Eliza Andrews Barnhizer. This letter was to his paternal grandfather, Joseph in Sigourney, Keokuk County, Iowa. Joseph had owned a mill in Putnam County that he bought from his father in law, Elisha Stout. He and his wife Samantha traded the mill for 320 acres in Keokuk County.
