Jennings, early Thursday morning, following an illness of a week. Mrs. Hemker was ill about a month ago, but had recovered from that illness and about a week ago pneumonia developed and she gradually weakened until death came at 2:30 o'clock Thursday morning. Mrs. Hemker's maiden name was Catherine Schwindemann, and she was born in Baden, Germany, in 1826 and was 90 years old last Tuesday. She spent her early life in the country of her birth, and there was united in marriage to Stephen Birkmeyer [Burgmeier]. After their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Birkmeyer came to this country and the deceased had been a resident of Delphos and vicinity for many years. She lived in this city for a long time and about ten years ago she went to Ft. Jennings to make her home with her son and daughter, Albert Birkmeyer and Mrs. Mary Daub. Mr. Birkmeyer died about 50 years of age and about 1867 his widow was united in marriage to Frank Hemker, who passed away about fifteen years ago. The deceased is survived by two daughters and two sons from her first marriage, Mrs. Mary Daub and Albert Birkmeyer, Ft. Jennings; John Birkmeyer, Danville, Ill.; and Miss Kate Birkmeyer, Toledo, and one daughter, Mrs. Josephine Vagedes, St. Louis, Mo., and one son Peter Hemker, of Landeck, from the second union. One sister, Mrs. Casper Holdgreve, one brother, Martin Schwindemann, Chicago, twenty grandchildren and several great-grandchildren, are also living. Mrs. Hemker was a devout Catholic and was also a member of the Sacred Heart League and the Altar Society. Funeral services will be held from St. John's Catholic church in Delphos, Saturday morning at 9 o'clock, and burial in St. John's cemetery. The remains will be brought to Delphos Friday afternoon and taken to the home of Mr. and Mrs. Louis Metzger, at the corner of Second and Bredeick streets, where they will remain until the hour of the funeral services. LAY BODY OF PIONEER TO REST The funeral services over the remains of Mrs. Catherine Hemker, whose death occurred at the home of her son, Albert Birkmeyer, at Ft. Jennings, were held from St. John's Catholic church Saturday morning and a large assemblage of relatives and friends paid their final tribute of respect to this aged pioneer. The members of the Altar Society attended the funeral in a body. The remains of Mrs. Hemker were brought to Delphos Friday afternoon and taken to the home of Mr. and Mrs. Louis Metzger on West Second Street where they lay until the hour for the funeral. Rev. Fr. Rupert delivered the funeral sermon and the requiem high mass was intoned by Rev. Fr. Goebel. Appropriate music was afforded by the choir of St. John's Catholic church, and the body was conveyed from the church to St. John's cemetery and there laid to rest in the family lot. The pall bearers were Messrs. Leo Sendelback, John G. Birkmeier, Charles Lang, John C. Schaffer, M.J. Landick and Henry Metzger. There were many beautiful floral offerings and spiritual tributes contributed by loving relatives and friends. Attending the funeral from out of town were: Mrs. Frank Ferneding, Mrs. Frank Meyers [niece Rose Holdgreve], Miss Anna Holdgreve [niece], Mrs. Barbara Schwindemann, Dayton, John Burkmeyer, Jr., Decatur, Ind. [grandson]; Tony Holdgreve, Cloverdale [nephew]; Peter Hemker, Landeck [son]; Mr. and Mrs. John Burkmeyer [son], Mr. and Mrs. Harry Thompson, Danville, Ill [granddaughter Bess Burkmeyer]; Mrs Andrew Vagedes, St. Louis, Mo. [daughter]; Miss Kate L. Birkmeyer [daughter], Mrs. Mary Miller, Mrs. James Degnan, Harold Birkmeyer, Toledo [grandson]; Martin Schwindemann, Chicago, Ill. [brother] There were also many friends from Landeck, Ottoville, Ft. Jennings and surrounding country.
