The second child of a family of eleven children. His father Thomas was a grazier who reared cattle on a 104 acre farm near New Bolingbroke, Boston , Lincolnshire. Joseph married Elizabeth Taylor from Old Bolingbroke at Spilsby Registars Office on the 12.06.1849 and in August that year emigrated to the USA settling at Rushford, Winnebago County, Wisconsin. Their twin sons William Marshall and George Taylor Maidens were born at Rushford, where Joseph was employed as a labourer. Between 1850 and 1854 they moved to Painesville, Lake County, Ohio where their daughter Sarah Jane Maidens b, 6.08.1854 and John Thomas Maidens b, 22.02.1858 were born. Reference the 1860 US census the family had then moved to Shelby, Richland County, Ohio and Joseph's occupation is listed as a Saloon Keeper. Son, George Franklin Maidens b 6.08.1864 was born at Shelby. In the 1870 census he is listed as Grist Mill worker. 13.01.1873 Elizabeth his first wife died and is buried in the Oakland Cemetery at Shelby. Joseph was remarried 19.02.1879 to Sarah Rebbeca Hagenbuch. In the 1880 US census he's listed as a Grist Mill engineer. Joseph died 24.05.1882 buried in the Oakland Cemetery where a grave monument lists both his, and Elizabeths names. Joseph died intestate and his son John Thomas Maidens was appointed administrator, total value of his estate was $545.95c. The Probate records are available at Mansfield Ohio records office.
