The land is only slightly elevated near the center, dropping slightly lower near the northern boundary. The cemetery’s eastern boundary is located next to a small park, divided by a beautiful old ornate wrought iron fence. A very impressive gated entrance commands your attention as you walk near center of eastern border. This gate has the cemetery name wrought in an arch over the entrance. It’s nestled next to a beautifully kept village park, near the western edge of SR61. All this is located just north of the railroad tracks, not for from the Huron County border. This cemetery was formally owned by a private organization, but for some time has been the property and responsibility of the village. By good luck, I was able to obtain much of this background information by the kindness of a village worker, Bill Houser, he was doing some maintenance on the lawn of the park, next to the cemetery, when I first arrived. He said the village owns both Pioneer's Rest and Greenlawn Cemeteries. Greenlawn Cemetery is very large and still active, located just south of this cemetery and on the other side of the railroad tracks, where route 98 splits off of SR61. There are some stones that have toppled & broken and many have weathered to an extent that they are no longer readable. My brief sampling of this cemetery shows stones with readable dates as early as 1824, so it has been used for this purpose at least 185 years, possible longer. Readings are only partial, random and alphabetized, not organized by rows yet. I hope to return next year and do a more complete reading of this cemetery. Robert M.
