INTRODUCTION While recently doing genealogical research for my family, I discovered that there are no good records of cemetery gravestone inscriptions in Ross County, Ohio. What records there are cover only a small portion of the total cemeteries in the county or cover only a small fragment of a whole cemetery. This first volume is an attempt at a beginning to rectify that situation. Why bother to record inscriptions, you may ask? They are set in stone. They will always be there. Well, they will not always be there. Gravestones are cracking, chipping, and breaking into pieces. Inscriptions are being worn off by the wind, rain, and freezing and thawing. Many of the first stones set in this county are no longer readable. In addition to the relentless forces of nature, many stones are being destroyed by persons who want the cemetery spaces for crops, pasture, or buildings, by vandals, and by careless cemetery caretakers and township trustees. Cemetery gravestones are in many instances the only record that we have left of some of the people who settled this county, and who 1. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ lived, worked, and died to make the county what it is today. Many of the names, dates, and other information inscribed on the gravestones are recorded nowhere else but on the stones. Once the stones are gone, then all the information on them is lost forever. This volume attempts to list every gravestone found in the cemeteries covered in this volume, whether the stone be a tombstone or gravestone, a footstone, or a lot or line marker. Only those stones without an inscription or with an unreadable inscription are not included. Each number in a list represents one stone. Spaces between inscriptions under the same number represent different sides of the same stone, or completely separated inscriptions on the same side of a stone. Spellings are in all cases the same as are on the stones, even when the spelling on the stones appear to be obviously wrong. This is to insure that all the inscriptions are accurately rendered. I have tried to follow the punctuation and capitalization on the stones as closely as possible, but in some instances found it necessary to correct or add minor punctuation in order to make the inscription understandable. 2. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ All comments within parenthesis are solely my own, written only for clarification and added information, and are not inscriptions on any of the gravestones. "Alas! those pioneers, the brave, enterprising men who made their homes first in the western land ....... have passed away. Their names, at least, should be remembered by those who now reap the fruits of their labor." ______ Isaac Finley and Rufus Putnam in "Pioneer Record and Reminiscences of the Early Settlers and Settlement of Ross County, Ohio. 3. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ WRIGHT CEMETERY in BUCKSKIN TOWNSHIP The Wright Cemetery is located on the west side of the Lyndon-Goodhope Road, approximately one tenth mile south of Black Lane. It is in good condition and fairly well cared for. About half of a dozen of the stones in the cemetery are completely unreadable, having been worn smooth by the sands of time. This list was compiled on the cemetery site on November 5, 1977. 4. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 1. John A. More than half of the stones in the cemetery are of common field stone, and about two dozen of them have no inscriptions. Quite a few stones have been piled up in heaps and are no longer at any particular grave site. There are evidently several stones missing, because older people of the area remember stones being more numerous than at present. Some of the stones have more than likely been thrown into sunken graves that have been filled in. Many have fallen over and have sunken into the ground where they can be mown over, and they are slowly being covered and hidden by grass. Undoubtably other stones have suffered the same fate.
