Hickle Cemetery in Deerfield Township ................... p. 3. 3. Moore Cemetery in Twin Township .......................... p. 13. 4. Index to Volumes I and II ................................ p. 55. *********************************************************************** INTRODUCTION This volume, like volume I, attempts to list every gravestone with a readable inscription, whether the stone be a monument stone, a lot line stone, or a footstone. Inscription readings in this volume are arranged so that one line on a page equals one line on a stone. Each number in a list represents one stone. Spaces between readings under the same number represent different sides of the same stone, or completely separate inscriptions on the same side of a stone. All information within parenthesis is solely my own, written only for clarification and the added information of the reader, and is not an inscription on any of the gravestones. Inscriptions are written exactly as they are on the stones, or exactly as they appear to be on the stones. The reader should keep in mind that time and wear often change the character of letters and numbers, making them entirely different than when they were first inscribed. The letters G and C often look alike, and W and M are sometimes identical. An 8 when badly worn becomes a 3, and a 2 becomes a 7. 1. ********************************************************************** Names, dates, and facts on stones, especially on the older stones, are sometimes wrong. A complete stranger to the deceased, given the wrong information, may have inscribed the wrong facts. Sometimes stones were inscribed and erected many years after a death, when memories were dim and the real facts faded in the mind. Occasionally, words were misspelt. I found one stone with the month of April spelled Aprel. On another, a man's surname was spelled Bristol, while on his wife's stone it is spelled Briston. The reader seeking accurate information should accept inscriptions as fact only with caution. The names of cemeteries in these volumes are as listed on the "1976 Highway Map of Ross County, Ohio", published by the Ross County Engineer and Board of Commissioners. Cemetery locations on the map are not always accurate. Therefore, I have given the exact location of each cemetery, when I describe it, as it really is. 2. ********************************************************************** HICKLE CEMETERY IN DEERFIELD TOWNSHIP. The Hickle Cemetery is located on the south bank of Stall Run where the small stream crosses Egypt Pike road. The cemetery is on the north side of the road, and is visible as you drive by. All of the stones have been commercially made. Neglect is the most evident characteristic that shows in Hickle Cemetery. Weeds are shoulder high. Vines are a half inch in diameter and sinking their roots into cracks and lettering on the stones. Fertilizer bags from nearby fields have been piled up in the rear of the cemetery, and old rolls of rotted fence, and fence posts, have been thrown into its entrance. Many stones have fallen over and are being covered with earth and grass. Some of the heavier stones are lying face down and cannot be uprighted or turned over without tools more extensive than ordinary hand tools. The cemetery certainly needs more attention to its care than it has received. This list was compiled on site at Hickle Cemetery on 25 Nov. 1978. 3. ************************************************************************ 1. E. T. 2. J. T. 3.
