He was born August 1, 1922 in Ross County, the son of Charles and Harriet (Spurgeon) Benson. He married Emma Mae Downs, who survives, on June 28, 1947. Mr. Benson was a World War II Army veteran, VFW member, a former volunteer for the Greenfield Fire Department and a former employee of Greenfield Research. He was retired after 48 years as an employee of U.S. Shoe Corp. In addition to his wife, he is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Kandy Benson of Good Hope; one daughter, Brenda Sue Wise of Greenfield; two granddaughters and husbands, Melissa and Randy Bosier of Leesburg and Heather and Paul Hess of Greenfield; two sisters, Ethel Bennett and Goldie Wilson of Greenfield; one great grandson, Dalton Hess; and three step grandchildren. Mr. Benson was preceded in death by three brothers and five sisters. Funeral services will be held Monday, August 5, 1996 at Murray Funeral Home in Greenfield. Burial will be in Good Hope Cemetery, with military rites accorded by Greenfield VFW and the Bainbridge American Legion. Friends may call at the funeral home from 12-1 and after 4 p.m. Sunday.
