Miller, 87, of Springfield, Ohio, died Tuesday, February 13, 1996, at his residence. Born September 1, 1908 in South Salem, Ohio, he was the son of Joseph and Julia Miller. He retired in 1973 from the Springfield Public School System after 44 years of teaching. He also taught at South Salem, West Liberty and Englewood. He was an active member of the Covenant Presbyterian Church where he was in the choir for over 30 years, taught Sunday school and served as a lay minister. He covered Shawnee H.S. basketball and football games for the media from the school's first season in 1958 until 1991, when the school honored him by naming a new weight training facility in his honor. He graduated from Whittenburg University in 1929 with a degree in history and later completed his masters degree at Ohio State University. He was a Past Master of Mad River Masonic Lodge F & AM 161 and the York and Scottish Rites. On December 20, 1941 he married Ruth (Shumaker) Miller, who survives. Also surviving are one daughter, Julia of Springfield; three sons and daughters-in-law, Dane and Mary Louise Miller of Warsaw, Indiana, Neal and Heidi Miller of Colorado Springs, Colorado and Grant and Barbara Miller of Newark, California; and eight grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Covenant Presbyterian Church in Springfield with the Rev. Thomas Stout officiating. Burial will follow in Ferncliff Cemetery. Friends may call from 3-8 p.m. Friday at the Jones Kenney Zechman Funeral Home in Springfield, where a Masonic service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Donations may be made to the Ersie E.
