Elijah Truett, of Ross county, O., died May 7, 1853. He was born in Sussex county, Delaware, February 24, 1770, and was awakened and converted in the nineteenth year of his age, under the preaching of Rev. Ebenezer Everett. He joined the Methodist Episcopal Church, of which he remained a member till death. Soon after his conversion he erected the family altar in his father's house, and under his first prayer a sister was awakened, and soon the whole family united with the Methodist Episcopal Church. Soon after his second marriage, which occurred October 9, 1794, he removed to the state of Georgia, where he lived about ten years; but becoming disgusted with slavery and its connections, he returned to the state of Delaware, and a few months afterward removed to Ross county, O. He received license to preach in 1808, and in 1815 joined the itinerancy, and was appointed to Salt Creek circuit. In 1816 he traveled Scioto circuit. In 1817 he was received into full connection ["full connection" should be 1810 according to ME records], elected deacon, and appointed to Brush Creek circuit. At the close of this year he located. He was an acceptable member of the Church sixty-three years, and a preacher about forty-five. As a man and a Christian he was remarkable for his uprightness, integrity, affability and humility. As a preacher he was acceptable and useful: hence, Christians loved him, and all respected him; and when the Master called, his work was done, he was ready to go. David Smith.
