Additional Comments: Miller was a close friend of my grandfather, John H. Cokonougher Sr. Miller and my grandfather had a reputation for being the two stongest men in the county. There is an old family story that says that Miller and my grandfather were drinking and having some fun one night in the small village of South Salem when they decided to pull a prank on one of their neighbors. They picked up a big boulder of stone and threw it over the neighbor's picket fence into his neatly groomed yard. Then they disappeared. When the neigbor and a large group of other town citizens discovered the rock in its new location the next morning, they gathered around it and speculated as to how it got there. There were no horse hoof prints, no sign of any machines, and the rock was clearly too heavy for someone to have tossed it over the fence. Its sudden appearance on the wrong side of the fence was a big mystery. The crowd pondered the mystery for quite a while. A few walked away and went back to their business, and others came to take their place. Small towns don't have a whole lot of entertainment, so when anything new happens they love to talk about it. Finally, a white-haired old man, whose wrinkled and worn face very clearly showed that he was a man of many years and great experience, wandered by. Without saying a word, he walked up to the rock, mused over it, and listened quietly to the crowd before he offered his own opinion. "Well, you can all think what you want", he slowly and deliberately said, "but I'll tell you one thing, there's only two men around here that is stong enough to lift that rock and throw it . . . and that's Miller Ogle and John Cokonougher!" After much more discussion, the crowd agreed with him. In the meantime, Miller Ogle and John Cokonougher weren't saying a word. They were each safely and quietly at home in their owns beds, sleeping off the good time they had had the night before. The boulder turned out to be so big, that it took two teams of horses to drag it back to its original position. Word has it that Miller and John chuckled for weeks over the stir they had caused in the community. Neither one ever publicly admitted to their prank, but their families have laughed ever since whenever they remember this treasured family story.
