Mook, one of the prominent farmers of York township and a highly respected resident, died very suddenly at his home near Colby Tuesday evening at 7 o’clock, aged 66 years, 7 months and 23 days. Deceased had been in failing health for several months, but was able to be up and around. He spent the afternoon at the blacksmith shop at Colby and started for home about 6 o’clock. When in front of the residence of T.A. Zimmerman, Mr. Mook was observed to stagger and fall. Neighbors carried him home and Dr. Baker, of Clyde, was hastily summoned. He was, however, unable to render any assistance as the unconscious man passed away shortly after the physician arrived. Death was due to a stroke of apoplexy. Deceased was a son of the late Conrad Mook and was born and raised in York township where his entire life was passed. He was married to Miss Katie Swartz, the widow who survives. Deceased leaves one son, Charles Mook, who is married and lives at the old homestead. He also leaves four sisters; Mrs. W.S. Jones, of Colby, Mrs. J. Fitterer, of Flat Rock, Mrs. Theodore Fitterer, of near Bellevue. Mrs. Samuel Royer, another sister, died several years ago. The funeral will take place from York Free Chapel Friday afternoon at 2 o’clock with interment in cemetery adjoining. _____ Green Springs Echo, 6 Sep 1906 * There is a poem and some other statements at the beginning of this obituary that I could not read because of the quality of the photocopy. It was something from H.W. Longfellow.* John H. Mook was born near Bellevue, O., Jan 5, 1840, was married to Katie Swartz in 1863 and died of apoplexy Tuesday evening, Aug 28, 1906. Three years ago July 27, while visiting at the home of his son, Mr. Mook suffered a similar stroke since which time he has suffered much, especially the last four months though death was unexpected. Mr. Mook was stricken while returning from the blacksmith shop where he had spent most of the afternoon and was assisted home where he died soon after. He had been a resident of this place for about 40 years and was a man with a quiet, disposition and spent much of his time in his home where he will be especially missed not only by those who cared for him during his sufffering but also by the little grandson in whom he took great delight and was a constant companion. He leaves to mourn besides the widow, one son, J.C. Mook, and one grandson. Funeral services were held Friday afternoon at York Free Chapel conducted by Rev. Tetherough. Interment in adjoining cemetery. Those in attendance from a distance were: Mr. and Mrs. John Null of Ellbert, Ind., Mrs. Drummiller and J.P. Schwartz of Three Rivers, Mich. _____ Clyde Enterprise, 30 Aug 1906 Mr. John H. Mook, a well known farmer living near Colby, died suddenly Tuesday night, Aug 28, 1906 from a stroke of apoplexy. Mr. Mook started from the blacksmith shop to his home about forty rods distance at the supper hour. He was stricken on the way and sank to the road. Mr. H.E. Royer wen to his assistance and carried him home. He passed away about 7 p.m. without being able to utter a word. About three years ago he had a stroke of paralysis an he has been in poor health all summer. Deceased was born in York township, Sandusky county, Ohio, on Jan.5, 1840. He was marrid Sept 12, 1863 to Miss Katherine Swartz, who was one son, Mr. Charles Mook, survives. He was a worthy citizen and was highly esteemed by his neighbors and friends.
