Swander of Bloomville was instantly killed when the auto truck in which he was riding was hit by an electric car near Clyde on Tuesday evening of last week. Mr Swander had been in Bloomville visiting his brother but a few days before his death. Account of the accident: "A traffic accident on McPherson Hwy claimed another life Tuesday evening in the death of Benjamin Swander, 74, a resident of Adams twp, who was instantly kiled when his small truck was struck by a west bound Lake Shore Electric car at Birdseye's Corners. The accident occurred about 6:30 while Swander was enroute home after his day's work at the J.E. Pettys home within 100 ft of the scene of the accident. Swander had been employed at the Pettys orchard for the past three seasons during th apple harvest and had begun his work there Monday for this season. According to Mrs Pettys he quit work at 6 o'clock and left a few minutes later for his home. His intentions were to take the Streeter road to Lay Pike, but apparently he failed to note the approach of the interurban which struck his machine and carried it down the track. The unfortunate man's body was found some distance from the crossing. The body was removed to the home south of Clyde. Funeral services will be held this afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Block Church and burial will be made in the adjoining cemetery." Benjamin F. Swander was born in Adams twp Jan 31, 1855, and was raised in the family of Josiah "Uncle Joe" Kistler, his parents having died when he was a boy nine years old. In his young manhood he was married to Miss Alvira Gooding, daughter of Mr and Mrs Joseph Gooding and they resided for many years on the Swander farm south of Clyde. After the death of his wife several years ago, he gave up his home and has been living with his children, spending most of his time with a daughter, Mrs Allan Manbeck of Adams twp. Three children survive him. Mrs Warren Manbeck of North Ridge, Mrs Samuel Wicker of Tiffin, and Mrs Allan Manbeck of Adams. A son, Ernest Swander, preceded him about ten years ago. He had been a farmer during his entire life and was highly respected in the community in which he lived.
