B. Smith Interred in Oakwood Thursday The remains of Mr. and Mrs. Heman B. Smith, pioneer residents of Fremont were laid at rest Thursday afternoon in Oakwood Cemetery following impressive double funeral services at the family home at the corner of Birchard and Bidwell avenues. The services were largely attended by relatives and friends and there were many beautiful flowers. Rev. Merrick E. Ketchum. pastor of the Methodist church, officiated at the services. Brainard lodge, F. & A. M. had charge of the services over the remains of Mr. Smith, who was an old member of the lodge. The Masonic burial ritual was carried out in the hall and the house and also the impressive final rites at the grave, under the direction of the Worshipful Master, Albert Cook and the other lodge members. During the funeral hour several appropriate selections were rendered by the members of the M. E. Choir. The pall bearers who carried the body of their brother to the grave were members of the Brainard Lodge. Messrs. John B. Coonrod , W.S. Lewis, E.C. Gast, Will Schrader, Will Kenan and Grant Lease. Nephews served as pall bearers for Mrs. Smith. They were Messrs. Hosea Cleland, R. Park, A. Talley, Herman Sterling, Harry Sterling and Thad Park. Among the relatives and friends of Mr. and Mrs. Smith who were here attending the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. B. Jerome, Mrs. Rutter of Bowling Green; Mr. and Mrs. Parks and Mr. and Mrs. A. Talley of Tiffin, Hosea Cleland, New Reigel; Mrs. Addie Eddy, Cleveland; Mrs. H. Gambee, Norwalk; Mr. and Mrs. Herman Mygatt, J. Daywalt, Tiffin; Mrs. A. F. Sterling, Misses Fannie Effie Sterling, Harry and Herman Sterling, Mr. and Mrs. Herman Hart of Toledo; Mrs. Wingerd of New Riegel; Mrs. Stoliper, Tiffin; Milton Ricketts, Bascom; Mrs. S. Walter, Tiffin; Mr. and Mrs. Thad Park of Toledo. A little Family History: Sidney Cecelia McCormick born 22 MAR 1830 married Martin Shrenk in Sandusky Co. Ohio on 11 Nov 1865. He was a soldier in the Civil War, Co.F, 8th Regiment, Ohio. Martin had also been a newspaper printer/editor and a grocery keeper before the war. In 1870, they owned a boarding house in the 1st ward, Fremont, Ohio. Martin was the Asst. Marshall (Census taker) for Sandusky Co. in 1870. In the 1880 census, Cleveland, Cuyahoga Co. OH, they lived in Cleveland, Cuyahoga Co., OH and Martin's occupation was listed as a Printer. Martin Shrenk/Schrenck died on 7/17/1880 at 58 years old of pneumonia. Their address was 149 Hamilton in Cleveland. He is buried at Woodland Cemetery in Cleveland. On 9 FEB 1882, Celia returned to Fremont and married Heman B. Smith who was a harness manufacturer and City Clerk and then the Mayor of Fremont, Ohio in 1888. Heman was age 39, harness maker boarding with John Newman family in Fremont, 4th Ward, in 1880. In 1889-90, Heman B Smith businesses were at: Location 1: 207 N. Arch and Location 2: 303 Bidwell in Fremont, OH. His Occupation is listed as mayor and harness mfr. Heman died 23 OCT 1911 in Fremont, Ohio. Cecelia died 24 OCT 1911. Both buried in Oakwood Cemetery in Fremont, Ohio.
