The cemetery, in a wooded area and heavily overgrown, is not visible from the road. According to a 1982 inventory provided by the Scioto County Chapter of the Ohio Genealogical Society, the cemetery covers about 1.2 acres with ?graves scattered over a wide area, most of them on either side of a path that runs up a hill.? Milldale Cemetery was inventoried by Virgil and Marguerite Ramsey. They found 44 fieldstones and 14 markers with inscriptions. There is a map of the cemetery showing 113 stones, mostly fieldstones, in the Portsmouth Public Library. Names on the 1982 inventory The information on these individuals is from the inventory unless otherwise indicated. 1. Pearlie Irena Webb Pearlie Irena was a daughter of William and Weltha Webb. Howard Presley, 88, died 17 Feb 1927 in the Columbus, Ohio, home of his son John R. Presley. Rev. Presley was a retired minister. He was born 22 May 1839 in North Carolina, a son of Mr. and Mrs. John R. Presley. "Rev. Presley was well known throughout Portsmouth (Ohio) and vicinity, where he had spent the past 60 years of his life. Rev. Presley conducted services in churches in this city, New Boston, Sciotoville and numerous other communities in the county during his many years of service in the ministry. He was born in North Carolina, where he spent his early childhood. He served during the Civil war and received his honorable discharge at the close of the war. Soon after he started his career in the ministry and was active in this work until forced to retire on account of his age." In addition to his son, Rev. Presley was survived by three daughters, Mrs. Joseph W. Bailey, Mrs. Charles Locher, Mrs. Dan Neal, Mrs. Harry Schomberg; two brothers, Sam and Robert, and two sisters, Mrs. Laura Lambert and Mrs. Mary Jones, all of North Carolina; 28 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Note: Rev. Presley's tombstone has his birth year as 1846. But his death certificate says he was born in 1839. Source: place of death, Ohio Deaths, 1908-1932, 1938-1944, and 1958-2002. 7. Goldie Sue Fletcher In 1982 researchers found Goldie Sue Fletcher's grave marked by a "Sowards Funeral Home Sign." Birth and death: 1958. According to Ohio death records, Goldie Sue died two hours after her birth on 25 June 1958 in the Southern Ohio Medical Center, Mercy, in Portsmouth, Scioto County, Ohio. Rachel Samuel Walk Rachel Samuel Walk was born 12 March 1963, a son of Temple Walk and wife Hazel Fletcher of Lick Run, Wheelersburg, Ohio, in the Southern Ohio Medical Center/Mercy Hospital in Portsmouth, Scioto County, Ohio. The four-month-old baby died 16 Jul 1963 in Mercy Hospital. In addition to his parents, Rachel was survived by seven brothers and sisters, Adam, Slenna, Rebekah, William, Raffin, Fred and Andrew; grandfather Van Buren Walk and grandmothers Dorothy Fletcher and Flossie Fletcher. Services were held in the Gill Funeral Home with the Rev. Wayne Sturgill officiating. Rachel Samuel Walk was interred in Milldale Cemetery, Scioto County. Denver Gearheart Denver Gearheart was born 21 Nov 1921 in Portsmouth, Ohio, a son of Lewis Gearheart and wife Martha Fletcher, both Kentucky natives. Denver died on 07 Dec 1921 in Portsmouth. Information from 1982 cemetery inventory: "Age 11 days. Homemade stone, almost unreadable. Down on ground." Note: The inventory states Denver was born and died in 1922. Biars John Phillip A. Biars was born 03 Feb 1875, Harrison County, Ohio, a son of Gustava "Gus" Biars and wife Kate Krause. He died in Scioto County, Ohio, in the Great Influenza Epidemic, around 1918-19, according to family members. Mr. Biars is buried in the Milldale Cemetery, Scioto County. He married Catherine Middleton (27 Aug 1887 Greenup County, Ky./18 Aug 1931, Bonser Run, Sciotoville, Ohio) 16 Oct 1905 in Scioto County. Mrs. Biars was a daughter of James Middleton and wife Eliza Sparks. (Alternative spelling of Catherine?s name ? Sarah Cathryn Middleton. Additional spouse: John Edward Rice.) Children of John and Catherine were Nora Marie Biars (1911-1980), wife of Earnest Frederick Morrison; Fanny Biars, (Born abt. 1906), wife of Wesley H. Purtee; Marion Jane Biars (1915-1916); Opal Biars (1917-1918); Pearl Biars; Lisa Biars; and John Henry "Jack" Biars (1909-1972). According to a family member, Pearl died as a child. No information is available on Lisa. The date of death and place of burial is not known for Fannie. Daughters Marion Jane and Opal Biars died in childhood of influenza and are buried with their father in Milldale Cemetery. Nora is buried in Sunset Memorial Gardens, formerly Floral Hills, in Wheelersburg, Ohio. John is buried in the Pine Creek Baptist Church Cemetery, also known as Clapboard Cemetery, Wheelersburg. Note: In 1982 a cemetery inventory was done by Virgil and Marguerite Ramsey. At that time Mr. Biars' tombstone was "Off base and down." Infant Son Locher This baby boy was a son of P & M Locher, according to an inscription on his tombstone. According to information online, the baby was a son of Philip Locher and Maud Neal. He was born and died 03 June 1910 in Porter Township, Scioto County, Ohio. Infant Son Locher was interred in Milldale Cemetery. Sources: 1. The information is from newspaper obituaries, family members and vital statistic databases. 15. Amy Bailey Amy Bailey, 17 months old, died 29 July 1921 of "summer complaint." Amy was the daughter of Mr. And Mrs. W.W. Bailey of Robinson avenue. She was interred in Milldale Cemetery, Scioto County, Ohio. Bailey, Ohio Ave., New Boston, Scioto County, Ohio, died 20 April 1916 ?after a short illness of tubercular pneumonia. Had the deceased lived until today, Friday, she would have been nine months old. Besides the parents the deceased leaves four brothers, Ernest, Homer, Walter and William and one sister, Hilda, all at home. The father is a steel worker, The funeral will be Saturday afternoon at two o?clock from the Christian church with J.C. Harris in charge of services. Hilden Bailey Hilden Bailey, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Bailey of "Flat Hollow, back of Fullerton," died 20 March 1924. "The girl had been ill since January with appendicitis. Surviving are the parents and six brothers, Ernest, Homer, Walter, William, Gene and Willard. The family formerly lived at New Boston (Scioto County, Ohio). Funeral services will be held from the home Saturday morning at ten o'clock. Burial will be in School Land Hollow cemetery, New Boston." Hilden is probably Hilda who was listed as a survivor of Eva Bailey who died in 1916. Eva, the baby daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W.W. Bailey of New Boston, was also buried in Milldale Cemetery. Mary Bauer ?Mary Bauer, ten months old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Bauer, who live in two wagons in Stewartsville, died about 11 o?clock Friday night of pneumonia. The family have lived in the wagons in Stewartsville for about two years. There are several other children in the family. Note: There are some similarities between Mary Bauer and Marion Jane Biars, a baby who died the same day and was also buried in School Land Hollow cemetery, also known as Milldale. Marion Jane was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Biars and had several siblings. The Biars surname has several spelling variations. Family members say Marion Jane died at seven months old, according to her death certificate, and the newspaper article says Mary died at 10 months. 19. John Amos Bevens John Amos Bevens, the son of Mr. and Mrs. L. W. Bevens of Lakeside, New Boston, Scioto County, Ohio, died 02 May 1923. Joint funeral services were held for John and Amos Frederick Wilborn and Lucy Wilburn, children of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Wilburn. The three children died of ?pneumonia, following measles. A brief service was held at the home where the families live and burial was in School Land Hollow cemetery. Rev. Pearl Hughes of the Immanuel Baptist Church New Boston officiated. The Wilburn children were buried in the same grave and the Bevens child just a few feet away in the hillside burial grounds.? Marion Jane Biars Marion Jane Biars was born 30 Nov 1915 in Clay Township, Scioto County, Ohio, a daughter of John Phillip A. Biars and wife Catherine Middleton. Marion Jane, seven months old, died 30 June 1916 in New Boston, Ohio, and on 02 July 1916 was interred in Milldale Cemetery, also known as School Land Hollow Cemetery, Scioto County, Ohio. Marion, sister Opal and their father died during the Great Influenza Epidemic, according to family members. John Biars and Opal Biars were also buried at Milldale. Opal Biars Opal Biars was born 12 June 1917, a daughter of John Phillip A. Biars and wife Catherine Middleton. Opal, 18 months old, died 04 Nov 1918, in New Boston, Ohio, and was interred in Milldale Cemetery, also known as School Land Hollow Cemetery, Scioto County, Ohio. Opal, sister Marion and father John died during the Great Influenza Epidemic, according to family members. John Biars and Marion Jane Biars were also buried at Milldale. Infant Son Coinwell A baby boy born to Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Coinwell of New Boston, Scioto County, Ohio, died shortly after his birth on Sunday morning, 01 April 1917. ?The funeral services were held Sunday afternoon and burial was in the School Land Hollow cemetery.? John Henry Cooper John Henry Cooper, four-month-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Cooper of Rhodes Ave., New Boston, Ohio, died on 29 March 1910. A news article published Saturday, 02 April, said the boy died early Tuesday morning. ?The child died of measles and as both the parents and all of the other six children are bedfast with measles it was some time that the child?s death became known in the neighborhood. An undertaker was not called until 5 p.m. The family are poor, coming to New Boston from Lewis county, Ky., last December. The baby?s remains were buried in School Land Hollow.? Rexo Gibson Rexo Gibson, four years old, died 07 June 1923 after a "twelve days' illness of pneumonia and brain fever." Rexo was a son of Ollie and Addie Gibson. In addition to his parents, Rexo was survived by brother Ezra and sister Myrtle. He was interred in Milldale Cemetery, Scioto County, Ohio. John Herald Jr. John Herald Jr., 18-month-old son of John and Nancy Herald of Lakeside, New Boston, Ohio, died 20 Sept 1916. ?The funeral was held Friday from the home. Mary Katherine Horsley Mary Katherine Horsley died 29 April 1942 in her Rhodes Ave., New Boston, Ohio, home. She was the one-day-old infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Horsley. Mary Katherine was interred in Milldale Cemetery, Scioto County, Ohio, ?under the direction of A.C. Sowards.? The baby boy was interred in the Milldale Cemetery, Scioto County, Ohio, under the direction of Soward?s funeral home. Ohio, died 21 May 1926 in Portsmouth General Hospital. She was born in Lawrence County. Mrs. Mace was predeceased by her father John Neal and husband Aaron Mace. Her obituary says her husband ?died eight years ago.? (Note: There is a 1915 obituary for Aaron Mace.) She was survived by a son who was living in San Jose, Cal., and her mother Susan Neal. ?Death was due to complications, although the end is thought to have been hastened by a fall she sustained recently. Mrs. Mace was going to visit her mother on Bonser?s Run when she fell from a bridge. She was removed to the hospital several days ago for medical attention. Mrs. Mace had been in failing health for some time.? Funeral services were held ?from the Christian church in School Land Hollow back of New Boston? with burial in School Land Hollow cemetery. She lived with her son John Moore in Star Yards, Ohio. Mrs. Moore was survived by her son and 13 grandchildren. ?A married daughter died a number of years ago.? Eugene Mowery Eugene Mowery was a son of James Estel Mowery and wife Leota Gearheart. Eugene was born and died in 1930. He was interred in Milldale Cemetery, Scioto County, Ohio. Brother Harold?s obituary has their father?s name spelled Estel. 33. Harold Mowery Harold Mowery was born 29 Feb 1924 in Portsmouth, Scioto County, Ohio, a son of James Estel Mowery and wife Leota Gearheart of Star Yards, Ohio. Harold died in Portsmouth on 03 July 1924 at five months and four days old. ?Mr. and Mrs. Mowery are grief stricken over the death of their only child and they have the sympathy of a wide circle of friends in their bereavement.? Ronald Lee Nash Robert Lee Nash, son of Mr. and Mrs. Vincent Nash of Munn?s Run pike, New Boston, Ohio, died short after his birth on 17 Oct 1916. The funeral was held in the Nash home with Rev. Clara Pitts Clara Pitts, 43, died of cancer on 22 July 1915 in the Joseph, Ky., home of her mother Alice Spriggs. ?She had gone to her mother?s home seven weeks ago in the hope of benefitting her health.? In addition to her mother, she was survived by husband James Pitts, an employee of the C.F. Turner commission firm, and four children, Virda, Etta, Willie and Tora. ?Mr. and Mrs. Pitts had made Portsmouth their home for the past seventeen years. She was a faithful member of the School Land Hollow Christian church, near New Boston (Ohio), and will be buried Friday in the cemetery there.? Funeral services were held in the New Boston Christian church. She was a ?true and loving wife, a good mother and a kind and obliging neighbor. Mrs. Pitts was popular with a wide circle of friends in the city, who will be saddened at the news of her death. The bereaved relatives have the consolation of knowing they have the sympathy of all and that she died sure of eternal salvation.? Funeral services were held in the 16th Street home of her son. Mrs. Rigsby was interred in Milldale Cemetery, Scioto County, Ohio. Benjamin Franklin Shafer Benjamin Franklin Shafer, 75, died 26 July 1916 in the county infirmary of cancer, reported the Portsmouth Times, Scioto County, Ohio. ?Mr. Shafer was born in Pennsylvania and was brought to Meigs county, Ohio, by his parents when three years old. Ohio had been his home from that time till death. He was well known in New Boston and Portsmouth. His wife died in New Boston (Ohio) seven years ago and shortly afterwards Mr. Shafer started wandering about the country from place to place. His children lost all trace of him until about two weeks ago when Superintendent Weidner of the infirmary notified Ira Shafer, a son in New Boston, that his father was in that institution. The deceased was a quiet man and never told of his troubles. He was a member of the Fourth Virginia Infantry in the Civil War.? He was survived by six children, Ira of New Boston; James of Barberton, Ohio; Mrs. Francis Hill of this city; Ben of Boston, Mass.; Edward of Barberton; and Stephen A., who was in the U.S. marine service stationed in Haiti. Mr. Shafer was also survived by a brother, William Shafer of Gepharts, and two sisters, Mrs. Kate Yeley of Gepharts and Mrs. Edward Sheppard of Columbus. Baby Shears The three-day-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Elba Shears of Harrisonville Ave., near New Boston, Ohio, died 02 March 1921. The baby was survived by his parents and three brothers. ?The parents are grief-stricken over the death of their baby, born Feb. 28. Willard Shover Willard Shover, the 13-month-old son of Mr. and Mrs. William Shover of Spruce St., New Boston, Ohio, died 23 March 1916 of pneumonia. Willard was ?laid to rest in School Land Hollow cemetery Saturday morning, the funeral services being held from the home at 1:30 o?clock with Rev. Frank Wolfe in charge.? She was the wife of Isaac Snyder, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lafayette Brown and mother of Ruth. ?The deceased had been ill only eight days, being forced to take her bed last Saturday. She was twenty-two years of age. Friends and relatives were shocked to hear of her sudden death,? according to her obituary in the Portsmouth Daily Times. In addition to her husband, daughter and parents, Mrs. Snyder was survived by her a sister, Mrs. Esther Jackman of Peebles, and a brother, Mevel Brown. ?Mrs. Snyder was recently converted to the Pentecostal religion. Rev. B.F. Craig and Rev. Joseph Graham, Pentecostal pastors, will conduct the funeral services.? The Valley Sentinel obituary said she was buried in School Land Hollow cemetery. James Walter Sparks James Walter Sparks, year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Alva Sparks of Star Yards near Sciotoville, Ohio, died of pneumonia on 19 April 1926. Funeral services were held from the home. Norman Sparks Norman Sparks, 14-month old son of Mr. and Mrs. William Sparks of Milldale Road, New Boston, Ohio, died 12 June 1921 after a four-week illness. Norman was born 13 April 1920. George Spriggs George Spriggs, 78, of New Boston, Scioto County, Ohio, died on 16 Dec 1937. He was a former carpenter at the coke plant. Amos Frederick Wilborn 45. Lucy Wilborn Brother and sister Amos Frederick Wilburn and Lucy Wilburn died 02 May 1923 and were interred in the same grave at Milldale Cemetery, also known as School Land Hollow Cemetery, Scioto County, Ohio. They were children of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Wilburn. Joint funeral services were held for Amos and Lucy and a third child, John Amos Bevens, who died on the same day and was also buried in Milldale Cemetery. John was a son of Mr. and Mrs. L. W. Bevens of Lakeside, New Boston, Scioto County, Ohio, The three children died of ?pneumonia, following measles. A brief service was held at the home where the families live and burial was in School Land Hollow cemetery. Rev. Pearl Hughes of the Immanuel Baptist Church New Boston officiated. The Wilburn children were buried in the same grave and the Bevens child just a few feet away in the hillside burial grounds.?
