He had been in failing health for the last four years. Mr. Smith lived in Rome, Adams county, for 46 years and operated a ferry there for 18 years before coming to Portsmouth in 1917. He was last employed in the coke plant of the Wheeling Steel Corp.. Mr. Smith was married to Cora Belle Cory in 1888 and nine children were born to the couple, seven of whom survive. They are Mrs. R. L. Shumate, Mrs. Jess Hamilton, Mrs. Earl Martin, Mrs. William Royal, Mrs. Claud Thompson and Azro Smith of Portsmouth and Mrs. W. H. Burriss of Charleston W. Va.. The widow also survives. Funeral arrangements have not yet been completed. The body has been taken to Lynn funeral home where it may be viewed by friends and relatives.
