He boasted around town that he is to slick for Lima people and sarcastically remarked that "Lima people are too slow to catch a real smooth fellow, " But (?) is now demonstrated that he was mistaken in his opinion or that he is not smooth as he seemed to think himself. To Ft. Wayne Directly after being released from jail last week after the officers had about decided that he had regained enough of his memory to enable him to take care of himself he proceeded to Jones' hardware store and, while in the store, quietly (?) a steel saw and bracket and, secreting them beneath his coat he boldly walked out. In some manner he succeeded in transferring the instruments to August Monin in his cell in the county jail. With those tools Monin attempted to gain freedom, but being discovered after having sawed two locks from the door of his cell he was locked up in another cell and subsequently plead guilty to the charge against him. Having done all in his power to assist his friend, Devereaux, as he was so long known here, proceeded to make himself scarce and left town. As soon as the attempted jail breaking was discovered, the officers began a search for the man, Devereaux, and Sheriff Bogart at once notified all surrounding towns to be on the lookout for him. He turned up in Van Wert Friday night and stayed there until after breakfast Saturday morning. The local officers learning this, at once took up the (?) and, thinking that their man would probably make for Ft. Wayne, notified the officers to that city to arrest him on sight. They sent a photograph to the sheriff and had the good luck to receive information yesterday morning that a man answering the description had been arrested and was in custody. Deputy Sheriff Summers went over yesterday and came back at 10 o'clock last night with his man. STOLE A WHEEL Upon arriving at Ft. Wayne, Deputy Summers proceeded to the county jail and took charge of the prisoner. Here he learned that Deputy Sheriff Ryan, of Ft. Wayne, had seen a man answering the description sent, walk past the house and following him arrested the man and lodged him in jail to await the arrival of local officers. The man gave the name of Josiah (?) and modestly and strictly on.
