Page007 Mrs. Mary Elwell Passes to Her Reward Mrs. Mary Elwell living on South High street passed away on December 11, 1921 at the age of 82 years. Her funeral services were held at the M. E. church Tuesday afternoon Dec. 13th. She came with her parents to Putnam Co., Ohio in the pioneer days of 1853. She was converted in early childhood, was a life member of the Women's Foreign Missionary Society, secretary of the District Society for many years, and also a faithful worker in the Home Missionary, Church and Sunday school. She was one of the first crusaders of the W. C. T. U. in Putnam Co. and with all the power of her being has stood for the triumph of temperance and sobriety. She was a great render, and kept abrest with the times, she was informed on all the religious and political topics of the day, and wisely used her rare ability for the promotion of every good movement in the community. On Sept. 1st 1859 she was united in marriage to Hiram S. Elwell. To this union were born eight children. She was a remarkable mother. She was not only solicitous for the physical and temporal welfare of her children, but ever interested in the important thing of early Christian instruction in the home, and led each of her children to the acceptance of her Christ in their youth, and they are today all active members of the Methodist Church in their respective homes. The five surviving children were about her bedside as she died. They are John K. Elwell, Des Moines, Iowa; Mrs. John Shaffer, Akron, O., Mrs. Charles Rogers, Columbus Grove, O., Dr. Dwight Elwell, Toledo, O., and Mrs. Orvill Todd, Gilbon, O. The husband and three children proceeded her in death. She leaves to mourn their loss, the five children, eight grand children, and sister Mrs. Eva Griffiths, Vaughsville., and many relatives and friends.
