James celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary and the occasion was made joyous by the presence of their family, who joined them in an evening of pleasure. Sharing the event were the following sons and daughters. Mrs. J. J. Bachus, Mrs. A. A. Smith, W. H. James, S. R. James and Fred James, nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild. This wedding of fifty years ago was solemnized by Dr. George Foote in the chapel of Trinity Episcopal church, which is still a part of that church. After the wedding the bride and groom departed for New Jersey, where they visited the parents of Mr. James. The trip was made by way of the Panama canal and traveling was indeed difficult, it taking five weeks to reach New York. After visiting a year in the east they returned to San Jose and have made this city their home since that time. Both Mr. and Mrs. James came to California in 1867, the former from England to Connecticut and Mrs. James from Michigan. They first settled at the then flourishing New Alameden quicksilver mines, where he worked for a number of years. Thirty-five years ago he started the transfer business which is now the well-established City Truck and Transfer company. Mr. James tells many interesting stories of the early days in California when San Jose was but a small town and the railroad did not continue south of this city. During the day of the anniversary many friends called to wish Mr. and Mrs. James many more anniversaries.
