Several days ago a lady in the west part of town received a message that her son was being sent to Clyde at his own request. The young man had been quite ill some time before, but the mother supposed he has recovered, and she was quite overcome by the news of his supposed death, but proceeded to make arrangements for the funeral. The telegram gave the time of arrival at Clyde, and undertaker Fisher was at the station to meet the body. It didn't come, and he went to the next train, and in fact made six trips to the station with his hearse in expectation of the arrival of the "remains." Funeral arrangements were all completed, even to the preparation of an obituary for the Enterprise. Four days after the arrival of the message, while the family were consulting in great agitation over the non-arrival of the body, the young man appeared in Clyde very much alive, walked to the home of his mother and sister on Piety Hill and appeared before the family "in the flesh." It is needless to say the family sorrow was turned into joy, the funeral arrangements were cancelled and the obituary destroyed. A loosely constructed telegram, misinterpreted at the end of the line, was responsible for the mix-up. Transcribed by: Marianne Hitchcock Smith
