LIKES TO BE IN THE PEN John Nagy Is Lost When He Is Given His Liberty Columbus, Jan. 28--(Special)--Warden Thomas of the Ohio penitentiary is trying to create an individuality for John Nagy, Lorain, so he'll stay away from prison. Nagy came in 1902 to serve a life sentence for second degree murder, and remained until January, 1914, when he was paroled and placed in a job in Cleveland. In a few months he begged to be brought back. When the parole officer laughed at his request Nagy smashed a saloon mirror. "Now I guess they'll take me back," Nagy said. "He was happy when he saw the prison walls again in June, 1914," said Warden Thomas. Since that time Thomas has been trying to get Nagy prepared for another try at liberty. "Prison routine for 12 years robbed Nagy of every particle of "initiative," says Thomas. "The only thing he did for himself was to dress and undress. "We awakened him every morning, marched him to work and his meals, and told him when to go to bed. When he was paroled he was as helpless as a baby." Since Nagy returned, Thomas has been experimenting with him. He has had him outside the prison walls. Little by little he is adding to Nagy's responsibilities. "He may get enough 'nerve' so that he wont want to come back when we send him away," says the warden. MOST HORRIBLE ACCIDENT Haley Powell's Foot Torn Off While on The Excursion to Sandusky J. TEMPLE GRAVES DEFENDS LYNCHING And Gets Soundly Scored by Dr. Babbitt of Brooklyn, New York --A sad and serious incident of the excursion to Sandusky last Wednesday was the accident to Haley Powell of this place. When near Fremont, young Powell was standing on the step of a car and tapping passing objects with his foot. A friend warned him of the danger but he disregarded the warning and continued until a cattle guard caught his foot and jerked him from the train and mangled his leg almost to the knee. Joe and Clarence Morris saw him fall and gave the alarm. The train was brought to a stop and backed to the spot and the unfortunate boy was found having crawled to a fence, took the shoe from his mangled foot, took out the string and tied it above his knee to stop the flow of blood. He was picked up and taken to the company's hospital in Fremont. Just when he will be able to be brought home is not known. Here is another warning to the smart boys who are always seen on excursions running from car to car, endangering their own lives and annoying everyone else. Safety First The enterprise editor received the clipping below from a friend who says he considers it "slanderous" to editors, and we heartily agree with him. Here is the clipping: "An Oklahoma editor tells of an old Indian that came into his office to subscribe for the paper. The editor took his money, then the Indian wanted a receipt. The editor tried to talk him out of it, but Mr. Indian insisted on getting a receipt. After making it out the editor wanted to know why he was so persistent about wanting a receipt. The Indian said: "Me die some time. Go to big gate and Saint Peter ask if I had been good Indian. I say yes. Did you pay debts? I say yes. He say, did you pay editor for paper? I say yes. He say, where is receipt? I no have it. I have to run all over hell to find you to get receipt!" ----
