Robert Willard Hughes, sterling citizen, prominent business man and a resident of Clyde all his life, passed away last Sunday night at 11:45 at his home on Maple street after months of illness of several months. The funeral was held yesterday at 2:30, at the residence, conducted by Rev. Bubb of the Episcopal church at Fremont and under Masonic auspices, the interment taking place in McPherson cemetery. Mr. Hughes was born in Clyde Oct. 14, 1864, the son of Mr. and Mrs. C. J. Hughes. He was of Welsh and Scotch ancestry on his father's side and German on his mother's, and his ancestors came to Sandusky county among the earliest pioneers. In December of 1897 Mr. Hughes was married to Miss Myrtle Winters, and to this union was born one son, Robert Wynne Hughes, whose umtimely death July 10, 1916, at the age of 16 years, was a grievous blow to his parents. Nearly 44 years ago he entered the employ of Bruce M. Lyon, who kept a grocery at the corner of Main and Buckeye street. Several years later the store was moved to its present location in the Harkness block. In May, 1889, Mr. Hughes entered into a partnership with W. T. Mann and this partnerships continued for 24 years, when Mr. Mann was appointed postmaster, and Mrs. Hughes retained the business until his death. For the past 13 years Mr. Hughes had been President of the Citizens' Building and Loan Co. He was a member of the Exchange Club, and fraternally was affiliated with Monticello Lodge No. 224, F. & A. M. Clyde Chapter No. 90, R. A. M., Bellevue Council No. 80, R. & S. M., Fremont Commandery No. 56, Knights Templar, also Clyde Chapter No. 73, O. E. S. Besides his widow Mr. Hughes is survived by two sisters, Miss Nellie Hughes of Clyde and Mrs. Carrie Davidson of Lorain, and a host of warm personal friends. Fremont Commandery, K.
