About 1853 he, with his parents came to Kalida of Putnam County. About 1854 he with his father's family moved onto a farm two miles east of Columbus Grove where he remained until August 1862 when he enlisted as a soldier in Company G 81st Ohio in the Civil war, serving almost 3 full years, going into camp at Lima Ohio August 26, 1862 and leaving Lima for Corinth Mississippi, the 14th of October 1862 and returning home July 22, 1865. He served in Mississippi, Tennessee and Alabama until May first 1864, *** beginning of the Atlanta campaign, which continued four months, 120 days of almost continuous fighting. He was slighty wounded twice and had many close calls. He was on the march to the sea and through the Carolinas. He was a brave soldier. There was no duty too hard or danger too great. He never complained or found fault of the hardship and hard fare. He married Sarah E. McElderry, March 4th 1869 and to the union seven children were born two of whom with the wife and mother preceded him to the other world. The wife died October 19, 1896, Della the first daughter to die was 16 years and six months old, Orpha the second died at 20. Those living are Ida Hansberger of Road House, Ill., Alvin of Columbus, Ohio; Edward of Garbondale, Ill.; Lena Winder of Mount Vernon, Ohio' and Gale of Toledo, Ohio. Also Mildred Crickard who came into the home a child a few years old, a daughter of Mrs. Arnold, who only knew him as father and who is now Mrs. Mildred Geiger of Toledo Ohio. On September 29, 1901 he was untied in marriage with Mrs. Della Crickard of Lima, Ohio, who survives him. In addition to those above named he leaves to mourn their loss two brothers, one sister, a number of grand- children and a host of other rela- tives and friends. In early manhood he gave his heart to God and untied with the Untied Brethren church of Col- umbus Grove of which he remained a faithful member until death, May the 11, 1922 at the age of 78 years and four months. Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at the U. B. church, Rev. Shock officiating.
