Within Natural Limitations, A Community Can Determine its Own Death rate The Matter Boileddown We often hear the common ex- pression. "People were not so particular in former times in re- gard to matters relating to Public Health." This is undoubtedly true, but the people were not taught methods of disease pre- vention in former times as they are at present. In former times curative measures were emplyed alone, and all the world was edu- cated to employ measures to cor- rect results, when the proper and most economical plan would have been to prevent the results. Di- sease, sickness, death are results of cause, and the purposes of health measures are to prevent rather than cure. Two poems significant of con- ditions in the past and in the pres- sent, have come into our posses- sion, and we are please to print them tht they may be read and studied because they contain so much truth that is appilcable at this time. "Rural Sanitation." By W. C. Rucker, M. S. M. D. Assistant Surgeon General V. S. Public Health and Marine Hos- pital service. The happy days of childhood I often call to mind, I love to live them o'er again by memories ligh refined- The orchard and the meadow and the loft of fragrant hay, The garden, and the privy, and the well not far away. The farm yard with it litter of manure round about, The milking shed where flies ga- lore flew buzzing in and out, The pig sty and the chicken house the hens that scratched all day In the ground beneath the privy, with the well not far away. We took our joys and sorrows as they chanced to come along, My brother had the ground-itch and he didn't grow as strong, And Mary died of fever it was mighty sad that day- But we didn't blame the privy nor the well not far away. In the summer time mosquitoes used to sing the whole night, But we would keep the windows closed and thus avoid the bite, But Billy got the ague- and Lizzie pined away- Mosquitoes - Foul air - privy, And the well not far away. We used to think that death was just a punishment for sin- The sin of ignorance I say - so let us now begin, To try and get the windows screened but open night and day, And a sanitary privy with the well quite far away. Let's clean the cows at milking time, let's clean the barnyard too, Let's rid ourselves of fevers, and the chills and ague crew, Let in the air and sunshine, but drive the flies away, With the ancient typhoid privy, with the well quite far away. Tonsil Talk Mary had a little cough, it's bark was loud and sneezy; And everywhere the Mary went, the cough was always wheezy. It went with her to school of course, and met the school physician, Who found her adenoids were large, according to his mission. But now those horrid adenoids; her cough and tonsils vicios, Repose upon a doctor's shelf, and Mary feels delicious. ______________ The Striped Cucumber Beetle can be controlled by a dust made of lime arsenate and land plaster, recent experiments show. ----W.
