Thursday afternoon the Will Per- grin residence on Forest street nar- rowly escaped being destroyed by fire. Mrs. Pergrin had been across the street at a neighbor's and re- turned home and put a piece of dry wood in the kitchen stove. Leaving everything apparently all right, she went to another neighbor's for a few mintues and upon her return found the house full of smoke. The kitchen floor was buring and the heat from the fire was so great that it killed the plants in another room and cracked a mirror on the wall, besides ruining some woodwork recently fin- ished. She did some lively husling and succeeded in extinguishing the flames before they gained more headway without calling the fire department. Thursday evening about ten o'clock the fire department was called to the Rathbun home on South main street occupied by Mr. and Mrs. C. Scherf, to extinguish a blaze on the roof, caused by sparks from a chimney. A small hole was burned in the roof. ----
