Billings of the McPherson Garage seems to be the victim of cir- cumstances, for a time at least. Early in January two yound men drove up to his garage in a truck and secured a supply of gas and oil and then told him they had no money to pay for it. After some controversy the driver threw off four tires and told him to keep them a few days and he would be back and get them and pay for the gas and oil. About two weeks ago a detective came along and inquired about the tires, saying they had been stolen. Mr. Billings told him all he knew about the matter and he went away. Last Saturday Mr. Billings was arrested and taken a Fremont justice, on a charge of receiving stolen property. He gave a bond and the case was continued until Tuesday, when Mr. Billings and his attorneys, Ben H. Dewey and a Tol- edo lawyer were in court, and the detective was there with some affidav- its which the court refused to admit. The case was again continued until Feb. 27th. Nobody has any idea that Mr. Billings knowingly received stolen property, but that doesn't al- ter the fact that he is receiving a lot of unjust notoriety until the matter can be cleared up.
