Two Lessons In One

In a Cleveland street car hung a poster like this:

"Smash the (Picture of the Kaiser)
by Buying a Liberty Bond"

The car was well filled, when a rather tough looking
fellow boarded it and took a seat opposite that Liberty
bond poster. Suddenly, he saw the appeal. Raging, he
sprang to his feet, torn down the poster, threw it down
on the floor, and stamped upon it.

At once the car was in an uproar.
A dozen pairs of hands reached for the man's throat. 
There were cries of "Lynch him!" "Kill him!" "A spy!" 
"Hang him!" If ever a man looked sudden death in the
eyes, that man did. But a squad of police came a saved
him. They searched him and forced upon him several
liberty bonds of the new issue.

What was it all about?  Simply, the man couldn't read
the words of the poster but he recognized the picture of
the kaiser, and couldn't stand for that.

There are two lessons in this incident.  One is a lesson
of loyalty.  The other lesson teached that it may be
best to let the regularly authorized officials do the
hanging.

Observations

"What have I not done to preserve the ______ of these
horrors?" asked Kaiser Wilhelm. We'll bite. What haven't
you done, William?

Now they're predicting a shortage of soda water next
summer. Oh, well, the soda water business has always
been more or less of a fizzle.

The navy is testing the nonsinkable ship.
The navy can do as it pleases about it, but if anybody
wants us to test a nonsinkable ship he'll have to move
it back inland, not less than five miles from the ocean.

Little Scotland has in the fight one man for every 7 1/2
of her population. How many of dollars what you've got
have you in Liberty bonds? The Scots are fighting your
fight.

One of the rules of the Waukegan (Ill.) community dance
hall is "Ladies are forbidden to place their arms around
their partners' necks." Why is it that somebody is
always picking on the ladies while nobody ever takes the
joy out of life for a gentleman.

President Wilson proclaims April 26 the "Liberty Day"
when he wants the people to assemble in their repsective
communities and pledge anew their support in the cause.
"Right is might, and I won't quite while there's an
ounce of might left in me!" That's the way that the boys
with their backs against the wall in Flanders are
feeling.
