San Jose, California Sunday Morning, August 6, 1922 Apricot Tree 70 Years Old (Picture of Apricot Tree) (Caption: Apricot Tree Seventy Years Old And Bearing Abundantly Every Year) Special to the Mercury News: Mountain View, Aug. 5. -- The apricot tree pictured above is 70 years old and bearing abundantly every year. This is almost unprecedented for this kind of tree and is considered a marvel by all who have seen it. It was chosen, along with a number of others, _______ for a family orchard, and has certainly been a credit to the original owner, William M. Wear. According to first-hand information in the hands of a descendant of the Wear and Graham families, early in the '50's a group of neighbors residing on what is now Springs road, met and decided on a plan of planting a family orchard. Graham and Joseph A. Wear appointed a committee to go to the nearest nursery and select a suitable variety of trees for the purpose of establishing an orchard. The trees were purchased from the Fox Nursery and planted in the orchard now owned by Lizzie Hayes on the Springer road. Each year, from the time it began to bear, the tree has produced a bountiful crop of apricots and from the present appearance, according to those who claim to know, the tree will continue to bear as long as "humanity demands apricots." Current reports have it that during the 1921 season the tree yielded 30 boxes. (Concluded on Page Thirty-eight.) ----
