The county also contained part of the Black Swamp, a huge marshland. Tiffin, the county seat was named in honor of Ohio's first governor Dr. Edward Tiffin and founded in 1821. In 1850 the Ohio Synod of the Reformed church founded Heidelburg College. The discovery of natural gas in 1888 contributed greatly to Tiffin's industrial growth.
