There they reared a family of eight children, six sons and two daughters, and all emigrated to America, John George, Jacob, Christian, Frederick, Michael, Susannah, and Salome. Grandfather John Vogt was not the first Vogt to emigrate to America. This honor must be given to his daughter, Salome, who married John J. Finkenbine. Salome was the first Vogt to start for this country, the home of the free and the brave. It was in 1831 that John J. Finkenbine and wife Salome, nee Vogt, emigrated to America. They landed in New York and form there they journeyed westward to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. But they only remained in Philadelphia two weeks and from there went to New Hope, Pennsylvania, where they remained three years and six months. In the spring of 1835 they came to Shelby County and located in Dinsmore Township, on the farm now known as the old Finkenbine farm (and owned by the Secman Brothers) occupied by Lewis Mann, Jr. John Finkenbine and wife reared a family of eight children, Lewis, Jacob, Fred, George, John, Christ, Michael, and Dorothy. John Finkenbine died January 25, 1852, his wife Salome survived him thirty-six years. She died January 25, 1888. Lewis, son of John J. Finkenbine, died Sept. 11, 1887, Frederick died Feb. 23, 1891, George died Aug. 11, 1891. Only five are left to be with us today, Jacob who has reached his eightieth (80) milestone in life, and who formerly followed the vocation of farming, now lives retired life in Anna. John still follows farming and lives three miles south of Anna. Christ also is a farmer and lives two miles southwest of Botkins. Michael follows the carpenter trade and resides in Anna. This now will suffice for the Finkenbine family. The next to emigrate to America was Great Grandfather John Vogt, for after his daughter had come to this "New World" he and his family also grew anxious to come. So in the autumn of 1833, one year after his daughter had emigrated, John Vogt and his wife and four sons started for America. The four sons who emigrated with their parents were Jacob, Christ, Fred, Michael. After they were tossed about by ocean waves for one hundred days they reached America, landing in New York. From New York they journeyed westward until they reached Walnut Creek in Franklin County, Ohio, near Columbus. In 1833 John Vogt bought two hundred acres of land from the Lima Land Office in Franklin Township, Shelby County, Ohio. These two hundred acres are now owned by C.E. Fogt, Jr., Samuel Fogt and George L. Finkenbine. In the spring of 1883 (prob. 1884 ed. note) the four brothers, who came to America with their parents, started from Walnut Creek to their fathers farm in Franklin Township and this trip they made on a two horse wagon. They came to clear their fathers farm. But they had a very discouraging time of it. In the first place this farm was a solid thicket, not a tree was missing , and indeed must have been very lonesome for very few people lived north of Sidney, Ohio. But the boys tugged along. They lived in their wagons until they could erect a log cabin, which was built of round logs and mud; for a roof they used clap boards, for a floor the earth, for a window an opening , for a door a blanket. We need not wonder that these boys became somewhat discouraged with no better protection, while wolves and other wild animals could be heard and seen everywhere. The summer of 1883(previous note) proved to be very wet and as there were not ditches to carry away the surplus water, their crops proved a failure. This discouraged the Fogt brothers to think their labor was done in vain, and to complete the discouragement a great storm arose and swept the country and trees falling barely missing the cabin assisted the boys to decide to return to Walnut Creek to their parents. But in the spring of 1834 they concluded to try Shelby County again, bringing with them their parents for advise. The boys also had a mother to cook for them, which made it easier to get along. In short time they had a comfortable home and new emigrants continually surrounding them, they soon became convinced that this would soon be the leading country of the globe. In this same year, 1834 something strange occurred, the spelling of the name was changed; heretofore it was spelled Vogt but now Fogt, and why this was done remains unknown. Grandfather John Fogt died Sept. 8, 1845, and Grandmother died Jan. 4, 1840. In 1834 Jacob Fogt married Miss Julian Hagelberger, daughter of Phil and Julian Hagelberger. She was born in Germany in 1815 and came to America with her parents in 1833. Mr. and Mrs Jacob Fogt settled in Franklin Township on the farm now owned by Samuel Fogt. Jacob Fogt died May 26, 1860and his widow survived until Feb 22, 1871. They reared a family of seven children, Catherine, John H., Philip J., Peter, Julian, Samuel, and Sophia. All of these still live except Catherine who died Dec. 26, 1888. John H. lives east of Anna three miles. Philip J. also lives on a farm about three miles east of Anna, and Peter now lives in Anna. Julian married Jacob Pfaadt and lives about three miles southeast of Anna. Sophia who married George Wenger lives five miles north of Sidney on the Murphy pike. So much for the Jacob Fogt family.
