Manager, Stark County District Library in Canton... their e-mail is: scdlgen@oplin.oh.us ....in reply to my written request (715 Market Ave, North Canton, OH 44702 (330) 452-0665) for information on Abraham Baer (c. 1766-after 1846) whose daughter Sarah married John Patrick Creighton in Stark County. Their son, Jeroboam Baer Creighton, born in Paris Township, was my great-great- grandfather. He is buried in Akron's Glendale Cemetery. Enclosed: three sheets from one of those wonderful turn-of-the- century county books "Portrait and Biographical Record of Stark County, Ohio" published in Chicago in 1892. The article copied is about Professor Henry C. Baer (I've seen references to him in other Stark County books) born in Osnaburg Township [just west of Paris Township] in 1834. "His grandfather, Abraham Baer, was a Virginian, and was a of Swiss descent [strike the a - typo]. He subsequently moved to Pennsylvania, and was a partipant in the whiskey riots in that State. [will research this, but if anyone has information on this...] In 1806 he came with his family to Ohio, and located in Osnaburg Township, Stark County, and began his career as a pioneer." "family...consisting of sixteen children, twelve sons and four daughters...On the Little Sandy he built the first sawmill in the township, which later became known as Hershberger Mill." "He was a Dunkard in his religious views and lived to be over eighty years of age." The BAERS seem to be associated with Massillon, where J. B. Creighton lived at the time he enlisted in the Mexican War. The article also includes information on the DOLL family, mother of Prof Henry C. Baer, who after a Civil War career in Michigan's Sixth Michigan Infantry (he had earlier been a student at the Musical Conservatory at Dayton, Ohio) settled back in his home town of Massillion, where he gave music lessons and led Baer's Orchestra. -- Al Dawson, Berea, OH.
