A Canton Couple Elopes
CANTON – Oct. 8 – (Special) – Albert Eicher, a prosperous young dairyman 
residing east of the city, has eloped with a handsome daughter of Henry Houtz, 
living in the same neighborhood.  Eicher had been keeping company with the 
Houtz girl for some years, the girl’s father being much opposed to it.  He 
objected to Eicher’s visits, but the girl paid no attention to her father’s 
objections.  She was guarded at her home by members of the family, while the 
elder Houtz kept Eicher at a safe distance.  During the absence of the old 
gentleman, Eicher passed with his milk wagon and told the young lady to pack 
up her duds and skip.  He hurriedly drove to the city and they then left for 
parts unknown.  The Houtz family is quite wealthy.  The runaways are supposed 
to be in Cleveland.

Married:  At the residence of Mr. D. Rolly, 35 Lafayette street, Mr. Albert L. 
Eicher and Miss Mary E. Houtz, the immediate relatives and friends of the 
bridegroom only being present.  After the ceremony which was performed by Rev. 
J. B. Rust, of the German Reformed church, the happy couple received the 
congratulations of those present.  A bountiful supper was then partaken of.  
Following are some of the presents received:  Jacob Eicher, father of the 
bridegroom, $100 in gold; Jacob Eicher, sr., clock; John Eicher, rocking 
chair; Mrs. G. Eicher, table cloth; Bertha Eicher, towels; Misses Emma Eicher 
and Louisa Hoeland, stand; Amelia Eicher, table cloth; Ida Eicher, silver 
table spoons; Mrs. Rosa Tennler, silver tea spoons and glassware; Florence 
Tennler, lamp; Ed. Eicher, clock; Lizzie Ritze, toilet set; Mrs. Ritze, flint 
glass goblets; Minnie Ritze, fruit dish and pepper holder;  William Archinal, 
rocking chair; Harry and Charles Archinal, oil painting; Mrs. Fred Wenger, 
napkins; Mrs. Charles Gilgore, table cloth; Mrs. Jacob Eicher, jr., Marseilles 
spread; Anna Eicher, silver tea spoons, and others.  Mr. and Mrs. Eicher will 
make their future home in Canton.

Canton, Nov. 16-[Special]—Albert F. Eicher and Mary E. Houtz, the couple who 
created considerable excitement here several weeks ago by eloping in a milk 
wagon, brought matters to an end last night by getting married.

Canton, Nov. 19 – [Special]—A curious case has been brought to light here 
within the past few days.  The PLAIN DEALER gave an account last week of the 
marriage of Albert Eicher and Mary Houtz, a couple who had eloped in a milk 
wagon from the home of the girl’s father some weeks ago.  It is now said that 
Houtz objected to Eicher’s attentions to his daughter because he was a 
Democrat.  The girl did not approve of her father’s objections and planned the 
elopement, coming to this city, where she remained until Eicher and herself 
were married a few days ago.  The strange part of the story as that Houtz is a 
soninlaw of J. H. Brenner, a staunch Republican and president of the Farmers’ 
bank.  Houtz was formerly a Democrat, but Brenner would not consent to the 
marriage with his daughter unless he changed politics.  Houtz did this to get 
his wife.  Now he has tried to have Eicher turn for the same reason.  It is 
also learned that Houtz wanted his daughter to marry a cousin named Hearshey 
living in Iowa, he being a man of wealth.  Hearshey came here the day the 
couple were married to claim his bride.  When the old man Houtz changed his 
politics to gain the hand of Brenner’s daughter his father disowned him.  
Eicher voted the Democratic ticket as usual this fall.
