Canton, Ohio. February 2, 1945. Tech Sgt. Bertram E. Dencer, 30, was killed Jan. 16 while serving with an infantry unit in France, it was announced by the war department. Mrs. Dencer (Opal) and son, Richard, reside with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. L.E. Dencer, at 1222 3rd st SW. A graduate of McKinley and a former employ of the Timken Roller Bearing Co., he played in several dance orchestras before entering service March 15, 1941. He received training at Camps Wolters and Swift, Tex., and Camp Van Dorn, Miss., going overseas Nov. 23, 1944. Survivors, in addition to his wife, son and parents, are two sisters, Mrs. Fred Brunner and Miss Fern Dencer of Canton, and a brother, Tech. Fifth Grade Robert E. Dencer, with the army in France. Dencer Presented to Widow Mrs. Opal Dencer of 1222 3rd st NW, received the Silver Star and Purple Heart awarded posthumously to her husband, T/Sgt. Bertram E. Dencer who was killed Jan. 16 in France at a recent ceremony in her home. Presentation was made by staff officers from Fletcher General Hospital. The citation accompanying the award stated “while withdrawing to establish a more suitable outpost, Sgt. Dencer and his group were ambushed by an enemy patrol. Seriously wounded, he ordered the men to withdraw to warn the company of the attack and himself remained to cover their movement. “When later a reinforced patrol was sent out they found Sgt. Dencer had died from wounds and the enemy had withdrawn.” The son of Mr. and Mrs. L. E. Dencer of the 3rd at address with whom his widow and son, Richard, make their home, Sgt. Dencer was well-known as a musician. He was a graduate of McKinley High School and a member of First Baptist Church. Employed by the Timken Roller Bearing Co., he entered service in March, 1941, and went overseas in November, 1944, serving with the 254th Infantry Regiment, 63rd Division.
