Notes for John Brittain: A year after Margaret's death (1832), John left Pennsylvania with his children and his three sisters. They drove a three horse team over the Allegheny Mountains, taking fourteen days to reach the vicinity of Middlebury, Ohio. Here John bought two hundred acres of land at eleven dollars an acre. He had his choice of two locations, one where Akron University now stands, or the property which surrounds what is now Brittain Road. These were the two highest spots in Summit County. He built a cabin on what was called the Chittenden Place, where earlier settlers had hidden during an Indian raid. From the Brittain Family History John was known to be a strong man. One day when the Brittains were making cider, a bully from a neighboring county came to see if he could beat John in a bout. This was a custom of the day to see who was the strongest man. Often men gathered to see and money was wagered. John said he would like a drink before the bout, so he picked up the barrel and drank from the bunghole. The bully left and never came back. John ws married a second time in 1834 to Gaynor Metlin. She was a member of the Gaynor family, one of the first to settle in Springfield Township. John and Gaynor's daughter, Catherine, did at the age of two years. Gaynor died in 1844. Later that year John turned the farm over to his son, John Thomas, but lived there until his death in 1857. John was a Methodist, and a Whig politically. He held many offices in the township. He helped start the first school in the county. At the time he settled in Springfield, not a house had yet been built in Akron, and only a sparse population was scattered over the township. Neither schools nor churches had been established, but John aroused enough interest to have a school house erected, the first one in Springfield Township. The first house built on the Brittain farm was destroyed by fire. It was replaced by the one which now stands at 95 Brittain Road, and in which John died. From Centennial History of Summity County by William Doyle Page 121 - Springfield Township Springfield Township was first settled in 1806 when Ariel Bradley moved from Suffield Township to what is now the village of Mogadore. Other early settlers were Thomas Hale, Benjamin Baldwin, John Hall, James Hall, Nathan Moore, Rueben Tupper, Abraham DeHaven, the Ellet family, the Norton family, Patrick Christy, James McKnight, William Foster, et al. The township was organized in April 1808. The manufacturing of the township is all in the pottery line as great beds of potters clay are found here. Coal was also mined. Mogadore is the principal village. North Springfield, Brittain, Thomastown, Millheim, and Krumroy are also flourishing hamlets. Springfield furnished nearly 150 men to the Federal armies in the Civil War.
