Springfield, MA d. 1840 Tallmadge, OH Buried Bettes Cemetery, Tallmadge Ohio This is a summary of Nathaniel's testimony on his application for pension: He was a Minute Man and went to Roxbury after the first action at Lexington (April 1775) under Capt. Sole, Col. Fellows Regiment (so called but not formally organized???). He stated he also served under Gen. Arnold at Quebec and suffered greatly through the winter and spring. They retreated under the directive of Gen. Thomas. He became ill and was sent home. In the summer of 1776 he re-enlisted under Capt. Noah Allen, Col. Wigglesworth's Regiment. He was in service until 1777 and after meeting the regiment at West Point they proceeded up the Hudson River to attack Brogoin. He was wounded in the knee. He then returned to Valley Forge where the suffering was great. He stated they lacked clothing and provisions. In spring, 1778, they went to Monmouth and was wounded by his own gun in the hand. They then went to Providence and on to Rhode Island. They were engaged in battle by the Hessians and Nathaniel stated that he faced the bayonet 3 times and was wounded twice in the leg. The regiment then returned to Providence for the winter. The next summer they returned to West Point. He was discharged April 10, 1780. He stated as property 150 acres in the wilds of Ohio ($550), his debts $505, and that at age 73 he was unable to support his family. To provide proof of his service he showed a Sergents and Sergents Major Warrant. Nathaniel is listed in many of the Summit County history books including SOLDIERS OF AMERICA BURIED IN OHIO and HISTORY OF AKRON AND SUMMIT COUNTY by Samuel A. Lane.
