Foster ufoster442@aol.com February 19, 2007, 11:26 pm Summit County (Ohio) Beacon Wed. 24 Dec 1851 We are dearly pained to announce the sudden departure from our midst of one of the oldest and most estimable of the citizens of Summit County, JONATHAN STARR of Copley township. While looking at some goods in the second story of the new store of P. D. Hall & Co., on Thursday last, in company with his son, who is a clerk in the establishment, he is supposed to have attempted to lean against a piece of carpeting - to rest a weak limb - which falling precipitated him through the opening left in the floor for the admission of light from above to the lower room, around which the railing had not yet been placed. He fell backwards a distance of 13 feet, striking the side of his head on the floor with such force as to crush in the skull and kill him almost instantly. No blame can attach to the Messrs. Hall, as they had not designed the room for public use until its completion. It is one of those casualties which, however sudden and afflicting, are occasionally occurring in every community, startling by the lesson they teach of life's uncertainties. Mr. Starr was a most exemplary citizen. He has filled various public trusts with faultless fidelity and was universally respected. Appropriate religious services were had at the Congregational church near his late residence, at his funeral on Saturday: Rev. Mr. Smith of Middlebury officiating. A large concourse was present to condole with the aged widow and relatives on their loss.
